Mold on Office Chair Armrests

Admin October 14, 2026

When mold appears on office chair armrests, it is necessary to first identify the cause, then carry out mold removal based on the severity of the mold, and finally take preventive measures.

Identifying the Cause

First, investigate the source of the moisture, such as whether the room is damp, whether ventilation is poor, or if there are any water pipe leaks. Only by identifying and resolving the cause of the moisture can you fundamentally prevent the office chair armrests from becoming moldy again.

Mold Removal

  • Early-stage Mold: For office chairs with early-stage mold, gently wipe the moldy areas with a damp cloth, and then use an air dehumidifier or ventilate and dry the area to remove any remaining moisture.
  • Severe Mold:
    • Disinfect with a disinfectant. Dissolve white vinegar or bleach powder in water, dip a damp cloth in the solution, and repeatedly wipe the moldy areas. After wiping, clean the areas with water and then dry them with absorbent paper.
    • For wooden office chairs, if there is slight mold, first use a vacuum cleaner to remove surface mold, then wipe the mold spots with a cloth dipped in alcohol or diluted bleach solution (mix bleach with water in a 1:3 ratio), and finally dry with a dry cloth. You can also directly spray a wood-specific mold removal spray on the moldy areas. For relatively new mold spots, first brush them clean with a brush, and then repeatedly wipe them with alcohol. Handling old mold spots is more complex. First, apply ammonia water to the mold spots, wait a moment, then apply potassium permanganate solution, wait a while longer, wet the area with sodium bisulfite solution, and finally rinse clean with water. When the mold has deeply penetrated, use sandpaper or a knife to scrape off the moldy areas until fresh wood is exposed (it is recommended to use 80 - 120 grit sandpaper for sanding). Then soak the chair in salt water for a long time, take it out, and let it dry naturally in the shade. Remember to avoid excessive exposure to the sun, as this can damage the furniture material. After drying in the shade, you can apply cooking oil to the surface as protection.
    • After disinfection treatment, place the chair in a well-ventilated area to dry. If the weather is sunny, let it sit in the sun for 2 - 3 hours to kill bacteria and mold, but be careful not to overexpose it and damage the furniture material.

Preventive Measures

Keep furniture clean and dry. Regularly clean office chairs and use an air dehumidifier, ventilation, and open windows to maintain dryness during humid seasons. Improve the indoor environment by adding desiccants or using dehumidifiers to regulate indoor humidity. Place moisture-absorbing boxes or packs near the chair on a daily basis to absorb moisture. For panel chairs, you can carry out fumigation treatment and add mold inhibitors, or repaint them with mold-resistant paint or attach waterproof stickers.
