Office Chair Armrest Loosening

Admin October 19, 2026

If the armrest of your office chair is loose, you can try the following methods to tighten it:

  1. Check the screws
The most common cause of looseness is loose screws at the connection points. First, inspect the connection area between the armrest and the chair base. Usually, you can see several screws (mostly hex socket screws). Use the matching screwdriver (such as a hex wrench) to tighten the screws clockwise. Be careful not to apply excessive force to avoid stripping the screws. If the screws are damaged or stripped, replace them with new ones of the appropriate model, ensuring they match the specifications of the original components.

  2. Check the internal connection structure
If the external screws are tightened but the armrest is still loose, it may be due to a loose internal adjustment mechanism (such as the central bolt for up-down or front-back adjustment). For such issues, you need to disassemble the armrest cover or decorative cap to expose the internal fastening points and then re-tighten them. Before operating, make sure you are capable of doing it yourself. If you are unsure about the steps, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician to avoid damaging the internal structure.

  3. Fill with gaskets
Observe whether there are gaps at the connection between the armrest and the seat. If there are gaps, you can use rubber gaskets or plastic gaskets to fill them and increase friction. When installing, ensure that the gaskets are positioned accurately and distributed evenly to avoid re-loosening due to uneven local stress.

  4. Check the connecting rod
A bent or deformed connecting rod can directly affect the stability of the armrest. For slight bends, you can try manual straightening, but be careful not to apply excessive force to avoid breaking it. If the deformation is severe, replace it with a connecting rod of the same specification, ensuring that the length and diameter match the original components. Otherwise, it may affect the installation or functionality.

  5. Use glue
Apply special glue (such as silicone glue or plastic adhesive) to the contact surface between the armrest and the seat. Make sure to confirm in advance that the glue is non-corrosive to the chair material and has an appropriate viscosity. Apply the glue evenly to cover the contact surface. After installing the armrest, let it dry in place (follow the time specified in the glue instructions). Avoid moving the armrest before the glue cures.

  6. Consider component wear and aging
If the chair has been used for a long time, the looseness may be due to aging and cracking of plastic parts or wear and deformation of metal parts. In this case, contact the brand to purchase original replacement parts. Avoid using non-matching parts to prevent structural instability or safety hazards.
