Office Chair Armrest Lifting

Admin October 10, 2026

The operation of lifting the armrests of an office chair can usually be achieved through the following steps, with specific methods varying slightly depending on the chair model:

  1. Locate the adjustment mechanism The height adjustment mechanism for the armrests of most office chairs is located beneath the seat or on the side of the armrests. Common forms include handles, knobs, or buttons. Some pneumatic lift chairs may be adjusted by repeatedly pushing the lever beneath the seat up and down. If the location of the mechanism is unclear, first check the concealed areas where the armrests connect to the chair body or at the edge of the seat. Some designs hide the adjustment keys beneath the cushion.

  2. Operate the adjustment mechanism

    • Handle type: Pull the handle upward (usually requiring some force) while slowly lifting the armrest to the desired height.
    • Knob type: Turn the knob clockwise or counterclockwise. For some models, continuous turning is required until the armrest loosens, and then the height can be manually adjusted.
    • Button type: Press and hold the button (which may require assistance from the thumb or a tool) while lifting the armrest upward. The armrest will automatically lock when the button is released.
    • Pneumatic lever type: Repeatedly push the lever beneath the seat up and down. Each push will result in a slight height adjustment of the armrest, and multiple operations are required to reach the appropriate position.
  3. Adjust to a comfortable height The ideal height of the armrests should keep the tips of the elbows level with the surface of the armrests (approximately 20-25 centimeters). At this point, the shoulders should hang naturally without being raised or lowered. If the armrests are too high, it may cause shoulder tension; if they are too low, the wrists will be left hanging in the air, increasing carpal tunnel pressure. When adjusting, sit up straight with both feet flat on the ground and knees at a 90-degree angle, and make fine adjustments while maintaining the correct sitting posture.

  4. Secure the position and test After releasing the adjustment mechanism, gently press the armrests to confirm that they are locked. If the armrests wobble, re-operate the adjustment keys until they are stable. After adjustment, place your arms naturally on the armrests and test whether they fully support the weight of your arms to avoid fatigue in the shoulder or wrist areas due to improper force distribution.

Precautions:

  • If the armrests are non-adjustable and too high, you can place a 3-5 centimeter thick cushion (such as a towel or memory foam pad) on the armrests to assist in leveling.
  • Be sure to read the chair's user manual before adjustment. Some models may require simultaneous operation of multiple adjustment keys (such as height + angle linkage adjustment).
  • After long-term use, the adjustment mechanism may become stuck due to wear and tear. Regularly clean the tracks or apply a small amount of lubricant (such as silicone grease) for maintenance.
