Introduction to Office Chair Armrests

Admin October 22, 2026

Office chair armrests come in various types and offer different functions. The following provides an introduction from the aspects of adjustment methods and materials:

Adjustment Methods

  • Fixed Armrests: As the armrests of the first-generation ergonomic chairs, their design is relatively simple and cannot be adjusted in height or moved. If the height of the office desk does not match them, the armrests will find it difficult to play a practical role and will mostly serve as decorations, making them inconvenient to use during office work.
  • Multi-Dimensional Adjustable Armrests: This is the type adopted by most chairs on the market currently. For example, the armrests of the Daboli Ergosmart can be adjusted in height, front-back position, and in-out angle, allowing for corresponding adjustments according to different needs during work and providing more tailored support for users. There are also 6D armrests, which are T-shaped armrests with more dimensional adjustment functions, further enhancing the flexibility of use. The newly upgraded "Magic" armrests of the Xiangyaojia F3A sponge seat support a wide range of rotation, which is very suitable for use scenarios where users often lean back and rest, meeting the needs of users in different states.
  • Retractable Armrests: These armrests were previously mostly used in shuttle buses or cinema seats. Nowadays, some office chairs have also started to adopt them. Their advantage lies in the fact that they can be retracted when not in use, saving space. However, their functions are less flexible compared to multi-dimensional adjustable armrests, and frequent folding will increase the wear and tear of the armrests, affecting their service life.

Materials

Office chair armrests can be roughly divided into hard plastic parts, soft-padded parts, and polyurethane foam parts according to their materials. Among them, polyurethane (PU) foam armrests are being increasingly widely used in high-end office chairs and ergonomic chairs. This type of armrest adopts a polyurethane integral foaming process, forming in one go. The surface naturally forms a dense skin film, and the interior has a uniform microporous structure. It has a fine and non-cold surface, a solid grip feel, and is also wear-resistant, weather-resistant, and acid-alkali resistant. It is not prone to cracking or deformation after long-term use. More importantly, it can better absorb the pressure from the arms, making it less likely for users to feel tired when placing their arms for a long time, providing a more comfortable experience for users.
