Office Chair Armrest Height

Admin October 22, 2026

The height adjustment of office chair armrests should follow scientific standards. Improper height can lead to shoulder, neck, wrist, and cervical spine diseases, while correct adjustment can effectively prevent strain. Details are as follows:

I. Hazards of Improper Height

  1. Hazards of Excessive Height: When the armrests are higher than the standard value, the scapular girdle muscles are forced to contract continuously, causing the shoulders to hunch up and the shoulder muscles to tense. Long-term use can increase the monthly incidence of frozen shoulder by 12%. A typical case is that of a 32-year-old designer, Mr. Chen, who developed from โ€œoccasional shoulder sorenessโ€ to โ€œdifficulty raising his armsโ€ and was diagnosed with frozen shoulder within six months due to excessively high armrests.
  2. Hazards of Excessive Low Height: When the armrests are lower than the standard value, the elbows hang in the air, forcing the wrists to bend excessively, which can easily compress the median nerve in the carpal tunnel and trigger carpal tunnel syndrome. At the same time, the hanging arms increase the burden on the shoulder muscles, leading to an imbalance in the muscles around the cervical spine and accelerating cervical spine degeneration. A 28-year-old programmer, Mr. Li, developed a straight cervical spine curvature and experienced stinging pain when shaking his head due to long-term use of low armrests.

II. Correct Adjustment Methods

  1. Height Adjustment:

    • Standard: Sit up straight with your arms naturally bent at 90 degrees. Align the tips of your elbows horizontally with the armrests. The vertical distance from the tips of your elbows to the seat surface at this time is the standard height (20-25 centimeters).
    • Operation: Support the tips of your elbows with your hands and slowly raise or lower the armrests until they fully support the weight of your arms, and your shoulders do not feel raised or lowered. If the armrests are not adjustable and are too high, you can place a 3-5 centimeter cushion; if they are too low, remove the armrests or use a footrest to assist in leveling.
  2. Forward and Backward Adjustment:

    • Standard: After adjusting the height of the armrests, push the armrests so that the bending point of the elbows is on the same vertical line as the edge of the desk. Rest your forearms naturally on the armrests with your wrists flat on the desk for operating the mouse and keyboard.
    • Alternative Solution: If the armrests cannot be adjusted forward and backward, you can compensate by adjusting the distance between the seat and the desk: sit up straight and extend your arms so that your fingertips just touch the edge of the keyboard, which is the appropriate distance.
  3. Width Adjustment:

    • Standard: When your arms hang naturally by your sides, the distance between your elbows should be the same as your shoulder width. Adjust the armrests so that the inner sides fit snugly against the outer sides of your upper arms, with a spacing of no more than 2 centimeters. For those with a larger build, the spacing should be 3 centimeters wider than the shoulder width; for those who are petite, armrests with an inward-adjustment function can be chosen.

III. Core Principles
After adjustment, ensure that the weight of your arms is fully supported by the armrests, your shoulder and neck muscles are relaxed, and your wrists remain naturally straight during operation. Regularly check the firmness of the armrests to prevent loosening that could cause height changes.
