Handling Office Chair Armrests

Admin October 10, 2026

Addressing issues with office chair armrests requires targeted measures based on the specific situation, with common methods including height adjustment, repair of damage, and replacement of fractures.

Adjustment Methods for Inappropriate Armrest Height

If the armrest height is unsuitable, follow the "right-angle positioning method" for adjustment.

  • Height Adjustment: First, adjust the seat height so that your feet are flat on the ground and your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle. Sit up straight and let your upper arms hang naturally, with your elbows bent at a 90-degree angle. Measure the vertical distance from the tip of your elbow to the seat surface as the standard armrest height (usually 20-25 centimeters). Adjust until the armrests can support the weight of your arms without causing your shoulders to rise or sink. If the armrests are non-adjustable and too high, use a cushion; if too low, remove them or use a footrest.
  • Front-to-Back Position Adjustment: After adjusting the armrest height, push the armrests so that the elbow bend point aligns vertically with the edge of the table. Rest your forearms naturally on the armrests with your wrists flat against the table. If the armrests cannot be adjusted front-to-back, compensate by adjusting the distance between the seat and the table. When sitting up straight and extending your arms, your fingertips should just touch the edge of the keyboard.
  • Width Adjustment: When your arms hang naturally, adjust the armrest width so that the inner sides fit snugly against the outer sides of your upper arms, with a gap of no more than 2 centimeters. For individuals with a larger build, the armrest width should be 3 centimeters wider than the shoulder width; for those with a smaller build, choose armrests with an inward-adjustment function.

Repair Methods for Damaged Armrest Surfaces

If the armrest surface of an office swivel chair is damaged, it can be repaired or modified.

  • Removing the Old Armrest Surface: Use tools to remove the damaged armrest surface.
  • Making a New Armrest Surface: Use a pencil to trace the outline of the old armrest surface onto a piece of cardboard to create a template. Draw the corresponding panel outline on small wooden strips, assemble them with wood glue, saw out the shape with a handsaw, sand it smooth, and then apply paint or wood wax oil.
  • Installing the New Armrest Surface: Install the newly made wooden armrest surface in its original position.

Repair and Replacement Methods for Fractured Armrests

If the armrest of a swivel chair is fractured, first determine the cause of the fracture and the connection structure.

  • Repair Methods: If the armrest material is special or the damage is minor, attempt repair. For fractured wooden armrests, use strong adhesives like 502 or 101 glue for bonding; it is advisable to seek professional assistance. For worn or peeling leather armrests, cover them with a "leather repair patch." For worn fabric armrests, small scratches can be sewn up, medium-sized tears can be patched, and extensive wear requires composite repair.
  • Replacement Methods: In most cases, replacing the armrest components individually is more cost-effective and thorough. Online e-commerce platforms are the primary purchasing channels. When selecting, ensure that the armrest type and bracket shape match the chair model, with prices ranging from a few yuan to several tens of yuan. When installing it yourself, prepare the necessary tools, remove the old parts by reversing the installation steps, install the new parts, and tighten the screws.
