Fading of Office Chair Armrests

Admin October 22, 2026

Fading of office chair armrests can be addressed with targeted measures based on the material, along with daily preventive care. Details are as follows:

General Preventive Measures

Regardless of the armrest material, avoid scratching the surface with sharp objects (such as keys or pen tips) to prevent coating damage and fading. When cleaning, use a soft cloth to gently wipe the surface, avoiding vigorous scrubbing with rough brushes to prevent surface wear. Prevent prolonged exposure to sunlight, as UV rays in sunlight can accelerate color aging and fading; if unavoidable, use curtains or sunshades for protection. When placing items, handle them gently to avoid prolonged pressure from heavy objects, which can cause localized fading.

Targeted Treatments for Different Materials

  • Leather Armrests: Regularly use specialized leather conditioners for maintenance. The conditioner forms a protective film on the leather surface, maintaining shine while preventing fading. Follow the product instructions, applying the conditioner evenly to the armrest surface and gently massaging until fully absorbed.
  • Wooden Armrests: Apply an appropriate amount of wood protectant to enhance wear resistance and fading resistance. If paint peeling occurs, for minor peeling, use nail polish as a remedy; choose nail polish that closely matches the wood color and apply it evenly to the peeled area. For more extensive peeling, cut old books, waste paper, or alum into small pieces, boil them into a paste, let it dry and harden, then apply it to the peeled area for repair.
  • Aluminum Alloy Armrests: Fading can be caused by prolonged contact with sweat, dust, and other substances during use, or by surface corrosion and oxidation layers formed by sunlight and airborne impurities. Improper cleaning with unsuitable cleaners or acidic substances, as well as untimely treatment of oxides formed by the reaction of aluminum alloy with oxygen in the air, can also contribute to fading. To restore the original color, use methods such as ginger stain removal: attach ginger slices to the armrest and gently wipe to remove stains; cleaner washing: choose professional cleaners, scouring powder, glass cleaner, or neutral detergents for regular cleaning; and sanding: for severely damaged or oxidized surfaces, sand them down and then apply wax or spray paint for repair.
