Office Chair Armrest DIY

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair armrest DIY can be achieved through three methods: solid wood texture modification, self-made cat-scratch-resistant upholstery, and low-cost elastic band covers. Here are the specific steps:

I. Solid Wood Texture Armrest Surface Modification This method is suitable for users who pursue a natural texture and have some woodworking skills. Tools and materials required include rosewood offcuts, a coping saw (or handsaw), a hand plane, sandpaper, a screwdriver, a utility knife, a pencil, wood wax oil (or paint), woodworking glue, etc. Production steps are divided into four steps:

  1. Disassemble the armrest: Use a screwdriver to remove the original armrest surface from the support plate, avoiding damage to the support plate structure;
  2. Draw the template: Place the old armrest surface (support plate) on thick cardboard, trace the outline with a pencil, and then cut it out. Next, place the cardboard template on the sawed small square wood and mark the wood cutting lines;
  3. Join the wood pieces: Cut the wood along the marked lines, arrange the two pieces of wood side by side on a woodworking table, apply woodworking glue, and then clamp them tightly with woodworking clamps. Let it sit for 24 hours for the glue to cure;
  4. Shape processing: Use a small hand plane to flatten the back of the joined surface, sand the concave surface with coarse sandpaper until it is flat. Place the old support plate on the new wood to trace the outline, and finally use a coping saw to cut out the final shape. The surface can be coated with wood wax oil or paint to enhance the texture.

II. Self-made Cat-scratch-resistant Upholstery for Computer Chair Armrests For pet-owning families, this method can effectively protect the armrests from cat scratches. Materials include towels, sisal rope (8mm in diameter), a hot melt glue gun and glue sticks, and scissors. Production process is as follows:

  1. Cut the towels: Cut the long side of the towel in half to form two approximately square pieces of fabric;
  2. Initial fixation: Cover half of the towel on the armrest, plan the wrapping method, and then use hot melt glue to stick the edges of the towel to the plastic part below the armrest cushion. Pay attention to applying glue step by step to ensure flatness;
  3. Wrap the sisal rope: Start from a concealed place at the bottom or side of the armrest, fix the starting point of the sisal rope with hot melt glue, wrap it tightly along the surface of the armrest, and fix it with glue after each wrap to finally form a wear-resistant and cat-scratch-resistant sisal layer.

III. Low-cost Elastic Band DIY Armrest Cover This method is suitable for users with a limited budget who pursue quick modifications. Materials required are only elastic bands and the strap fabric from a tank top. Operation steps are as follows:

  1. Cut the fabric: Cut the strap fabric according to the size of the armrest, ensuring the length covers the surface of the armrest;
  2. Fix the fabric: Wrap the fabric around the armrest, and then wrap the elastic bands multiple times at both ends and the middle of the fabric to fix it, ensuring the fabric fits the armrest snugly without looseness. This method does not require complex tools, but it is necessary to regularly check the elasticity of the elastic bands and replace aging ones in a timely manner to maintain the fixing effect.
