Office Chair Armrest Broken - Repair Guide

Admin October 10, 2026

If the armrest of your office chair is broken, you can choose to tighten the screws, glue the broken part, replace it with a new armrest, or deal with a malfunctioning height adjustment handle depending on the damage situation.

First, confirm the damage situation. Observe whether the screws at the connection are loose, the armrest itself is broken, or there is an issue with the height adjustment control device (such as the height adjustment handle).

If the screws are loose, prepare an appropriate screwdriver and use it to tighten the screws.

If the armrest is broken, for plastic armrests, prepare strong adhesive. First, clean the broken surface, then apply the adhesive and press firmly. Let it sit for a while to ensure it is secure.

If the damage is severe and cannot be repaired, measure the size and purchase a new armrest of a matching model for replacement:

  • For armrests fixed with screws, use a suitable screwdriver to turn the screws counterclockwise to loosen them. Remove the old armrest, align the new one in position, and tighten all the fixing screws.
  • For armrests fixed with pins, use needle-nose pliers to grip the exposed end. First, rotate it slightly left and right to loosen the adhesive, then pull it out forcefully. Then install the new armrest. If the screws are rusty and cannot be turned, you can first drop a few drops of lubricating oil and let it sit for a few minutes before trying again. If the screws are stripped, you can use a screwdriver to press diagonally against the edge of the screw head and tap it gently with a hammer to create vibrations, then try to unscrew it.

If the height adjustment handle is malfunctioning, the cause is often the accumulation of dirt and dust from daily use, or rust or physical damage due to frequent operation. The repair strategies are as follows:

  • Deep cleaning: Use professional cleaning agents and a soft cloth to thoroughly clean the handle and its surrounding area, removing accumulated dirt and dust.
  • Lubrication treatment: For rusty or slightly damaged handles, use a lubricant to reduce friction and restore smooth operation. First, remove the handle, spray the lubricant evenly, and then reinstall it.
  • Handle replacement: If the above methods are ineffective, you need to replace the handle. Choose a new handle of the correct model and install it according to the instructions.

In addition, pay attention to preventive measures during daily use, such as avoiding excessive force when adjusting the height of the office chair and gradually adjusting it to a suitable height. Regularly clean and lubricate the handle to ensure it is in good working condition. Keep the office chair in a dry environment and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to slow down rusting and wear.
