Office Chair Armrest Assembly
Admin October 09, 2026
The assembly of office chair armrests requires selecting the appropriate method based on the type and scenario. The specific steps are as follows:

I. Installation Steps for Regular Office Chair Armrests
- Prepare Tools and Accessories
Count the armrests, screws, decorative caps, and other parts to ensure the quantity and model match. Prepare a screwdriver, wrench, and rubber mallet (for gently tapping when adjusting positions). - Align the Holes
Invert the chair cushion and distinguish the left and right directions of the armrests (usually marked with 'L' and 'R'). Align the holes at the bottom of the armrests with the reserved holes on the side of the cushion. If the armrests need to be connected to the backrest, align the holes of the backrest and armrests simultaneously. - Preliminary Fixation
Insert the screws and manually tighten them to a preliminary fixed state (do not fully tighten) to leave space for subsequent adjustments. If the armrests are linked to the backrest, ensure the backrest can be adjusted flexibly after installation. - Install the Backrest and Fine-Tune
After installing the backrest, check if all the holes are aligned. Use tools to fully tighten the screws and then snap on the decorative caps to hide the screw heads. - Function Test
If the armrests support height adjustment, rotation, or sliding, manually test their functions after installation to ensure smooth operation and avoid jamming or abnormal noises.
II. Handling Special Scenarios
- Mismatched Holes
- Check if the armrests are installed in the wrong direction and adjust the angle of the cushion or backrest to realign them.
- When renovating an old chair, if the hole deviation is small, carefully enlarge the holes with an electric drill; if the deviation is large, use an adapter (evaluate the structural strength to avoid loosening).
- Loose Armrests
- Retighten all the screws; if the screw holes are stripped, fill them with wood shavings or adhesive (such as AB glue), let them cure, and then reinsert the screws.
- Adding Armrests to a Chair Without Them
- Purchase a universal adjustable armrest accessory kit and ensure the base is firmly attached to the chair structure (e.g., reinforced with metal brackets).
- Contact a professional shop to customize armrests, providing the chair model, fabric, and size data to ensure a good fit.
III. Key Points for Installing Wooden Armrests
Wooden armrests are usually fixed by embedding them into slots. Before installation, confirm that the direction matches the markings on the chair to avoid forced assembly that could crack the slots. If you need to retrofit a solid wood armrest surface (e.g., from rosewood offcuts), follow these steps:
- Remove the old armrest surface and keep the support plate as the base.
- Use cardboard to draw the outline of the old armrest surface and transfer it to the wood for cutting.
- Assemble the wood pieces and apply glue, clamp them tightly with woodworking clamps for 24 hours to ensure curing, and sand the edges until smooth.
- Apply paint or wood wax oil to protect the surface and then install the new armrest surface onto the support plate.
Precautions
- Avoid excessive force during installation to prevent part deformation or breakage.
- Do not overtighten the screws on metal armrests, as this could cause the entire chair to become loose.
- Regularly clean wooden armrests and wipe them with a small amount of oil (such as walnut oil) for maintenance to prevent cracking.
