Office Chair Anti-Descent

Admin October 16, 2026

The following measures can be taken to prevent an office chair from descending, and they should be implemented based on the specific cause:

I. Solutions for Aging or Poorly Sealed Pneumatic Rods

  1. Contact Official After-Sales Service
If the chair is still under warranty, prioritize contacting the brand's official customer service, providing proof of purchase and describing the issue. Mainstream brands typically offer a 3-5 year warranty for core components like pneumatic rods, allowing for free repair or replacement services. If the warranty has expired, you can still inquire about official paid repair channels or purchase original factory parts to ensure compatibility and safety.

  2. Replace the Pneumatic Rod Yourself
If the chair is out of warranty and the official repair cost is too high, you can replace the pneumatic rod yourself. Note the following:

    • The pneumatic rod is a one-time sealed component and must be replaced as a whole; it cannot be disassembled for repair.
    • Before operation, turn the chair upside down and safely remove the old pneumatic rod to avoid damaging other components.
    • After replacement, test whether the lifting function works normally to ensure there is no air leakage or jamming.
  3. Temporarily Improve Sealing
If oil leakage is found at the connection between the base seal ring and the piston rod, or if the rubber ring is cracked, apply food-grade lubricating grease to the edge of the seal ring to enhance sealing. This method only provides short-term relief, and the gas spring must be replaced within 48 hours to avoid safety hazards.

II. Emergency Measures to Stop Descent

  1. Lock the Height Adjustment Valve
After adjusting the chair to the lowest position, rotate the height adjustment valve clockwise to the locked state to temporarily prevent descent. This method is suitable for short-term emergencies and requires prompt inspection and repair.

  2. Tie the Pneumatic Rod to the Base
In emergencies, use plastic zip ties to tightly secure the junction between the pneumatic rod and the base to limit movement. However, the zip ties may break under pressure and should only be used as a temporary measure; the chair must be sent for repair within 48 hours.

III. Check Component Connections and Installation

  1. Tighten Connecting Screws
Check whether the connections between the pneumatic rod and the five-star base (footrest) and the seat chassis are loose. Loose screws may cause the chair to be unstable but usually do not trigger regular automatic descent. Tighten them with tools as needed.

  2. Adjust the Tray Direction
If the tray is installed backward, it will cause the lifting lever to be in the wrong position or the chair to tilt. Adjust the tray to the correct direction to ensure the lifting lever is on the right side and the chair is stable.

IV. Protection and Troubleshooting During Inspection and Repair

  1. Fix the Footrest Height
During inspection and repair, use wooden wedges to secure the casters of the footrest to prevent accidental sitting and sudden falling. If the adjustment handle rotates freely without rebounding, use an Allen wrench to unscrew the chassis and check whether the spring return device is dislodged and reset it.

  2. Purchase Anti-Aging Pneumatic Rods
After more than 200 hours of use, the purity of nitrogen in office chairs may decline, leading to accelerated sinking. A healthy pneumatic rod should descend less than 2 cm per hour when bearing 70 kg. When purchasing, look for TUV-certified Level 3 pneumatic rods, which feature a double-layer steel tube wall design and can withstand an explosion pressure of over 2400 psi, offering higher safety.
