Office Chair Angle Adjustment
Admin October 19, 2026
The angle of an office chair should be adjusted scientifically according to different scenarios, as follows:

I. Adjustment Principles and Methods
Office chairs achieve angle adjustment through gas springs (pneumatic rods) and locking mechanisms. Common adjustment methods include:
- Lever-type: There is an adjustment lever under the seat. Pulling or pushing it allows you to change the angle by leaning back with your body, and releasing it locks the angle.
- Knob-type: Rotating a knob on the side or back of the chair can control the recline resistance or directly lock the angle.
- Electric-type: High-end office chairs are equipped with buttons or control panels, enabling precise and stepless angle adjustment.
II. Recommended Angles for Different Scenarios
- Focused work or typing: Adjust the backrest to 90ยฐ - 100ยฐ. Keep your body leaning forward and your eyes focused on the screen to reduce pressure on the neck and shoulders.
- Reading or thinking: Widen the angle to 100ยฐ - 110ยฐ. This provides more support for the back, and leaning back slightly can help you relax.
- Lunch break or short rest: Adjust to 110ยฐ - 130ยฐ, close to a semi-reclined position. Combine with a U-shaped pillow and lumbar support to keep the spine in a natural and relaxed state.
III. Adjustment Steps
- Unlock: Locate the adjustment lever or knob under the seat. Gently pull the lever or rotate the knob to unlock the angle.
- Adjust the angle: Lean back slowly with your body to guide the backrest to a comfortable position. For executive chairs, you need to pull up the adjuster and lean back at the same time.
- Lock the angle: Operate the adjustment device again (such as pushing back the lever or tightening the knob) to ensure the angle is fixed.
IV. Precautions
- Health risks:
- Excessive recline angles (over 120ยฐ) can cause the head to lean back too far, making the cervical spine deviate from its normal physiological curvature, leading to strain, pain, and even cervical spondylosis.
- It can compress the chest cavity, limiting lung expansion and causing shortness of breath. It can also affect blood supply to the brain, resulting in dizziness and lack of energy.
- A recline angle of over 120ยฐ significantly reduces concentration and is not suitable for work scenarios.
- Safe operation: Before adjusting, ensure the ground is level to prevent the chair from sliding or tipping over due to inclination.
Scientifically adjusting the angle of an office chair can enhance comfort and reduce health risks. It is recommended to choose an appropriate angle according to actual needs and regularly check the stability of the locking mechanism.
