Office Chair and Floor

Admin October 08, 2026

When using office chairs with floors, it's important to protect the floor from scratches, which can be achieved through various methods.

Replacing Wheels: Switching the wheels of an office chair to PU soft-pack silent wheels is an effective approach. These wheels have a soft rubber outer layer, providing smooth and quiet rolling while minimizing the risk of scratching wooden or tiled floors. When purchasing, opt for fully-encased soft rubber wheels without exposed hard edges to ensure no damage occurs when the wheels come into contact with the floor.

Adding Protection:

  • Wheel Protectors: These are like putting 'soft-soled shoes' on the chair, wrapping around the original hard wheels to allow for quiet and smooth movement while preventing scratches on the floor. They also effectively prevent hair, lint, and other debris from getting tangled in the wheel axles, reducing irregular friction between the wheels and the floor caused by debris obstructing the rolling motion, thereby lowering the risk of floor wear.
  • Laying Special Floor Mats: Place a table and chair protection mat in the chair's activity area. A high-quality transparent PVC mat is a good choice. It has a high density, a smooth and scratch-resistant surface, and a non-slip design on the bottom layer, ensuring it stays firmly in place once laid. The mat is usually 5 - 8mm thick, with a texture on the top layer that guides the smooth rolling of the chair wheels and a non-slip grip on the bottom layer to effectively protect the floor.
  • Laying Soft Rubber Carpets or Blankets: Laying a soft pad or blanket with a diameter of over one meter and a thickness of about 2 centimeters not only protects the floor but also makes it easy to clean and replace when dirty, adding comfort to the space.

Considering Alternatives: For scenarios where there is absolutely no need to move the office position or where extremely high floor protection is required, fixed non-wheeled office chairs can be used. These chairs typically feature bow-shaped or four-legged designs, providing stable contact with the ground and good anti-slip properties, completely eliminating the risk of wheel scratches on the floor. However, they lose the height adjustment function and the convenience of mobility.

Regular Maintenance: Regardless of the type of wheels used, regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial. Hair tangled in the wheel axles and accumulated dust can obstruct rolling, leading to irregular friction between the wheels and the floor and accelerating wear. It is recommended to flip the chair over monthly, use tweezers or a small hook to remove tangled debris, wipe off dirt adhering to the wheel surfaces with alcohol wipes, and if possible, use an air gun to blow out dust deep in the wheel axles. In environments with a lot of lint, the cleaning frequency can be increased to every two weeks.
