Office Chair and Desk Height

Admin October 09, 2026

The standard heights and fitting suggestions for office chairs and desks are as follows:

I. Basic Height Standards

  1. Office Chair Height: The standard range is 40 to 50 centimeters, with a recommended seat height of 40 to 45 centimeters for the average adult. This height ensures that both feet can rest flat on the ground, with thighs parallel to the floor, preventing concentrated pressure on the legs.
  2. Office Desk Height: For the average adult, the recommended desktop height is 70 to 75 centimeters, with standard office desks typically ranging from 72 to 76 centimeters in height. Ideally, the desk height should match the user's elbow height, meaning that when the arms hang naturally, the elbows form a 90-degree angle, and the desktop just touches the forearms.
  3. Height Difference Requirements: The ideal height difference between the desk and chair is 25 to 30 centimeters. If the chair is too high or the desk too low, it can lead to forward shoulder tilt and neck stiffness; conversely, it may cause excessive lumbar bending and increased pressure on the lumbar spine.

II. Height-Specific Suggestions

People of different heights need to adjust the height of their desk and chair to maintain proper sitting posture:

  • Height of 160 centimeters: It is recommended to adjust the chair to 42 to 43 centimeters and pair it with a desk that is 70 to 75 centimeters high. At this point, the elbow height is approximately 72 to 73 centimeters, matching the desktop height.
  • Height of 165 centimeters: A chair height of 43 to 45 centimeters and a desk height of 73 to 75 centimeters are suitable. This combination prevents the arms from hanging or being raised too high.
  • Height of 170 centimeters: The optimal chair height is 45 to 47 centimeters, with a desk height of 72 to 76 centimeters. This ensures an even distribution of body weight and reduces fatigue from prolonged sitting.

III. Simple Calculation Method

If you need to quickly estimate the desk height, you can use the formula: Desk height = Height ร— 0.46 to 0.48. For example:

  • Height of 160 centimeters: 160 ร— 0.46 = 73.6 centimeters, 160 ร— 0.48 = 76.8 centimeters. It is recommended to choose a desk height of 70 to 75 centimeters (since the formula results are theoretical values, actual adjustments should be made based on chair height).
  • Height of 170 centimeters: 170 ร— 0.46 = 78.2 centimeters, 170 ร— 0.48 = 81.6 centimeters. It is recommended to choose a desk height of 72 to 76 centimeters (prioritizing the requirement for a desk-chair height difference of 25 to 30 centimeters).

Summary: Proper configuration of desk and chair heights requires considering height, chair height, and the difference between the two. The core goal is to maintain a natural upright body position and reduce strain on muscles and joints. If possible, it is advisable to choose adjustable-height desks and chairs and fine-tune them to the optimal state through actual use.
