Office Chair Always Reclines

Admin October 11, 2026

An office chair that always reclines may be caused by issues with the chair/sitting posture, improper recline resistance settings, an unlocked lever, or a stuck internal mechanical structure. Solutions include adjusting the sitting posture, regulating the resistance, unlocking the lever, or repairing the mechanical structure.

1. Chair/Sitting Posture Issues
If the chair's seat depth is too large or the sitting posture is incorrect (e.g., sitting too far forward), the back will be left unsupported, causing the body to naturally slide backward due to the shifted center of gravity. In this case, adjust the sitting posture: move the hips backward to ensure the lower back is fully against the chair back; if there is a gap between the lower back and the chair back, insert a lumbar support or a rolled-up towel for support. Additionally, an excessively large chair back angle will exacerbate the recline tendency. It is recommended to adjust the chair back to a slightly forward-leaning angle of 90-100 degrees to reduce the tendency of the body to slide backward.

2. Improper Recline Resistance Settings
Chairs with adjustable recline resistance need to have the resistance adjusted according to body weight and usage scenarios:

  • Heavier individuals: Increase the resistance (rotate the adjustment knob clockwise) to prevent a feeling of falling due to insufficient resistance when reclining;
  • Lighter individuals: Decrease the resistance (rotate the adjustment knob counterclockwise) to ensure reclining is easy and effortless;
  • Office slight recline scenarios: The resistance should be slightly higher to maintain a natural supported state and avoid frequent reclining that affects work efficiency.

3. Unlocked Lever
If the chair back cannot recline at all, check the black lever on the side of the chair (usually located on the right side of the seat). If the lever is not pulled out (in the locked position), the chair back will be fixed and unable to move. In this case, pull the lever out to the unlocked position to restore the recline function.

4. Stuck Internal Mechanical Structure
If the lever is unlocked but the chair back still cannot recline normally, the gas lift, spring, or connecting parts may be stuck. Try gently rocking the chair back or repeatedly pulling the lever to restore flexibility through mechanical friction; if the problem persists, contact after-sales service to repair the gas lift or spring system to avoid damaging the parts by forcing use.

During daily use, it is recommended to regularly check the condition of the chair's components and avoid rough handling to extend its service life and ensure safety.
