Office Chair Always Makes Noise

Admin October 11, 2026

The office chair always makes noise, which may be caused by loose connecting screws, lack of lubrication in the chassis pivot, wear and tear at the connection between the gas rod and the five-star base, aging and deformation of the plastic frame components, dry or improperly installed wheel bearings, or product quality issues. Solutions include tightening screws, applying lubricant, and replacing parts.

  1. Loose connecting screws: The screws at the connections of the backrest, armrests, chassis, and chair legs may loosen due to long-term sitting pressure and frequent reclining movements, creating gaps between components that rub against each other and produce noise when pressure is applied. The solution is to tighten all connecting screws to ensure a secure connection between components.

  2. Lack of lubrication in the chassis pivot: For chairs with a rocking and reclining function, the internal metal springs and pivot points may dry out over time, causing metal-on-metal friction and noise. Apply an appropriate amount of lubricant to the metal pivot points and connection gaps to reduce friction and noise.

  3. Wear and tear at the connection between the gas rod and the five-star base: The contact points between the top of the gas rod and the chassis, and the bottom of the gas rod and the five-star base, may wear down over time due to constant weight-bearing, creating gaps that produce friction noise when the body moves. Check for wear and, if necessary, replace the gas rod or five-star base, or apply lubricant to the contact surfaces to reduce friction.

  4. Aging and deformation of the plastic frame components: Low-cost chairs often use thin plastic frames that may deform slightly under prolonged sitting pressure, causing structural compression and continuous friction noise from gaps. This issue is generally difficult to completely repair. If the noise is severe, it is recommended to replace the chair.

  5. Dry or improperly installed wheel bearings: When the chair moves, the internal bearings of the wheels may lack lubrication, causing dry rolling friction and noise. Apply lubricant to the wheel bearings to restore smooth rolling.

  6. Installation issues: After purchasing the product, there may be unstable screw installations. Check all screws and tighten any unstable ones to ensure the chair is securely assembled.

  7. Poor product quality: Buying from obscure brands to save money may result in noise due to substandard materials. If the noise is slight but unbearable, consider replacing the casters with silent PU casters, or place a layer of adhesive paper between the chair frame and the hole walls to fill gaps and reduce friction.
