Office Chair Always Descending

Admin October 13, 2026

The most common reason for an office chair always descending is the aging or poor sealing of the gas lift, leading to the leakage of internal high-pressure nitrogen or the wear of the oil seal. The following steps can be used to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

I. Preliminary Self-Inspection

  1. Press Test
Press down on the seat quickly with your hand and feel the rebound force. If the seat goes all the way down without any cushioning, it indicates that the gas lift may be leaking air and cannot provide normal support.

  2. Sit and Listen
Sit on the chair and remain still, listening carefully for a continuous hissing sound of air leakage from the bottom of the chair. If present, it indicates that the seal of the gas lift has failed and air is leaking slowly.

  3. Observe Performance
Check if the chair sinks automatically without being adjusted or if the seat surface shows obvious tilting or unevenness. If such phenomena exist, the probability of a gas lift failure is high.

II. Eliminate Other Possibilities

Before confirming the issue with the gas lift, quickly check the following components:

  • Adjustment Valve/Locking Mechanism: Check if the adjustment knob or locking device at the bottom of the chair is obstructed by foreign objects, causing abnormal lifting function.
  • Screws at Connections: Confirm that all screws and bolts are tight, especially at the connection points between the gas lift, seat, and base. If loose, tighten them and test for recovery.
  • Special Inspection for Electric Lifting Chairs: If it is an electric model, check if the power is connected, if the circuit is short-circuited, and if the motor is operating normally. You can assist in judgment by replacing the power source or testing the motor sound.

III. Solutions

  1. Contact Official After-Sales Service

    • Find the purchase proof (invoice, order record) to confirm the brand and warranty period of the chair.
    • Within Warranty Period: Directly contact the brand's customer service. After describing the problem, you can usually get free repair or replacement of the gas lift.
    • After Warranty Period: You can still inquire about official paid repair channels or purchase original parts to ensure compatibility and safety.
  2. Replace the Gas Lift Yourself

    • Purchase Parts: Measure the diameter and height of the old gas lift and select a new one with a matching model. Prioritize purchasing products with SGS Level 4 Certification, TUV Certification, or compliant with GB/T 2280-2016 standards to avoid the risk of explosion caused by inferior parts.
    • Replacement Steps: Use a rubber mallet and a steel pipe to gently tap the bottom of the old lift to knock it out from the base and seat; install the new gas lift into the base and align it with the seat hole before fixing it. Wear gloves during operation to avoid scratches from high-pressure components.
    • Safety Precautions: It is strictly prohibited to disassemble, drill holes in, or repair a faulty gas lift by yourself. Its internal high-pressure state may cause an explosion, resulting in serious injuries.

Tip: If you still cannot determine the cause after self-inspection, it is recommended to contact a professional repair person first to avoid safety hazards caused by improper operation.
