Office Chair Air Pump Explosion
Admin October 19, 2026
The explosion of an office chair air pump refers to the sudden explosive phenomenon of a pneumatic lifting swivel chair caused by component defects, which mostly occurs in low-quality pneumatic rod products. It is necessary to pay high attention to its causes, hazards, and preventive measures.

Cause Analysis
- Thin Wall of the Pneumatic Rod: To reduce costs, low-quality pneumatic rods use materials with thin walls, which cannot withstand normal pressure and are prone to rupture under long-term use or external impact.
- Insufficient Purity or Substitution of Inert Gas: Regular products use high-purity nitrogen (stable and safe), while low-quality products may be filled with ordinary compressed air. The oxygen in the air reacts with the metal inner wall, causing rust and heat accumulation, which continuously increases the internal pressure of the pneumatic rod and makes the outer wall thinner and more brittle.
- Sudden Temperature Rise Due to Frequent Lifting: During frequent adjustments, the gas inside the pneumatic rod is repeatedly compressed, generating friction and heat. If the heat dissipation is poor, it may accelerate material aging and increase the risk of explosion.
Hazard Consequences
Such explosion accidents have severe consequences. Typical cases include:
- In 2013, a steel column with a diameter of 3 centimeters pierced through the lower body of Ms. Liu in Xiamen and entered her uterus due to a chair explosion, and dozens of metal fragments were removed from her abdomen.
- In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, died after a top rod pierced into his body while adjusting a pneumatic chair.
- Over the past decade, more than forty similar accidents have occurred in China, all involving the bottom of the pneumatic rod exploding and piercing through the human body, causing irreversible harm.
Preventive Measures
- Purchase Regular Products: Prioritize chairs priced above 200 yuan with clear production standards and quality inspection reports, and avoid buying "three-no" products.
- Check the Quality of the Pneumatic Rod:
- Test the smoothness of lifting and lowering without jamming or abnormal noise.
- Ensure that a blast-proof steel plate with a thickness of โฅ2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod to effectively block flying fragments.
- Usage Habits:
- Sit down gently to avoid sudden pressure.
- Reduce frequent lifting and lowering adjustments to minimize pressure fluctuations inside the pneumatic rod.
By strictly controlling product quality and standardizing usage methods, the risk of office chair air pump explosions can be significantly reduced, ensuring personal safety.
