Difficulty in Disassembling the Air Pump of an Office Chair
When encountering difficulties in disassembling the air pump (pneumatic rod) of an office chair, the following methods can be used to resolve the issue step by step. Ensure safety and avoid damaging components during operation:

I. Penetration with Lubricant
If the connection between the pneumatic rod and the chair seat base becomes stuck due to long-term use or rust, a general-purpose lubricant like WD-40 or specialized mechanical lubricating oil can be used. Apply the lubricant evenly to the connection gap, ensuring full coverage of the contact surface. Then, let it sit for at least 30 minutes to allow the lubricant to fully penetrate the threads or snap-fit structures. This method reduces disassembly difficulty by softening rust or reducing friction and is suitable for mild cases of sticking.
II. Rubber Mallet Tapping Method
Tapping is a common technique for resolving stuck mechanical structures, but attention must be paid to the force and location:
- Disassembly of the Chair Seat Base: Turn the chair upside down so that the base faces upwards. Use a rubber mallet to tap evenly around the four corners of the base, loosening the connected components through vibration. If the base does not separate, further tap the edge of the bottom steel ring, repeating the tapping around the circumference and then attempting to pry it open. Repeat this process until the base loosens.
- Separation of the Pneumatic Rod: If the pneumatic rod is still connected to the five-claw footrest, use a rubber mallet to tap the outer periphery of the bottom of the pneumatic rod (avoiding the central metal piece) to separate it from the footrest through vibration. It is recommended to tap through a soft cloth to prevent paint from peeling off or cracking on the surface of the footrest, and to avoid direct tapping on the central metal piece, which could damage the internal components of the pneumatic rod.
III. Operations for Special Scenarios
- Handling of New Chairs: If the chair is brand new and unused or has only been used for a short time (less than 1 hour), the pneumatic rod may be difficult to disassemble due to insufficient break-in. In this case, raise the chair to its highest position, hold the backrest, and slowly turn it upside down onto a stable surface, using gravity to loosen the structure before attempting conventional disassembly methods.
- Disassembly of the Hydraulic Lift Rod: After removing the base, if further disassembly of the hydraulic lift rod is required, first use a screwdriver to remove the fixing screws on the upper seat. Then, lightly tap the edge of the metal base with a hammer while holding the hydraulic lift rod with your hand or stepping on the base to increase counterforce, separating it through vibration and leverage.
Precautions: Wear protective gloves before operation to avoid cuts from metal debris. If components are severely rusted or deformed, it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel to prevent forced disassembly from causing the pneumatic rod to explode or damaging the chair structure.
