Office Chair Air Leakage

Admin October 13, 2026

Air leakage in office chairs requires serious attention as it can bring various risks and should be repaired promptly.

Risks of Air Leakage in Office Chairs

  • Usage Risks
    • Reduced Support: Air leakage in the pneumatic rod causes an imbalance in internal pressure, weakening its support capacity. The originally stable support structure becomes unreliable, and the chair may tilt or wobble. Users may find it difficult to maintain balance, increasing the likelihood of falls, which can result in abrasions or sprains. The consequences can be more severe for the elderly or those with weak physical conditions.
    • Sudden Failure Risk: Air leakage indicates internal faults in the pneumatic rod, which may worsen at any time. When the leakage deteriorates, the pneumatic rod may suddenly lose all functionality. When a person is sitting on the chair, it may collapse instantly, and the strong impact can cause various injuries such as spinal fractures, head impacts, and rib fractures.
    • Risk of Other Injuries: Air leakage in the pneumatic rod makes the chair unstable. When users instinctively adjust their posture, their movements may become more exaggerated, increasing the chance of colliding with surrounding objects. They may hit the edge of a table, causing injuries to their legs or abdomen, or experience excessive body twisting, leading to muscle strains or joint dislocations. If a high-back executive chair is used at a high position, it may also result in falls from heights, endangering life safety.
    • Explosion Risk: Although the probability of an explosion caused by air leakage in the pneumatic rod is low, since 2007, there have been multiple reports in China of explosion incidents involving pneumatic lift chairs, resulting in injuries and fatalities. For example, the chair may be blown through, with a large number of fragments flying into the body, or causing severe injuries to the buttocks, legs, rectum, and small intestine.

Repair Methods

  • Replace the Seal: A common cause of air leakage is the aging or damage of the seal on the pneumatic rod. First, locate the seal at the bottom of the pneumatic rod, remove it using a wrench or screwdriver, clean and inspect it. If damaged, purchase a new seal for replacement, and finally ensure it is firmly installed and test it.
  • Replace the Entire Pneumatic Rod: If the seal cannot be repaired or the air leakage problem persists, the entire pneumatic rod needs to be replaced. Turn the chair upside down, find the position of the screws connecting the pneumatic rod to the seat base, use tools to remove the screws and take out the old pneumatic rod. Purchase a compatible new pneumatic rod and install it in place, then test for air leakage.
  • Replace the Air Pump: If the chair loses air and sinks on its own, prepare an air pump and screwdrivers and other tools. First, disassemble the chair, remove the mobile star-shaped frame, release all the air, and then replace it with a new air pump. If the leakage continues after replacement, due to the significant safety risks associated with unprofessional air pump replacement, it is recommended to take the chair to a repair shop for professional repair or have a technician come to your location for repair.
