Aging and Peeling of Office Chairs

Admin October 22, 2026

The following treatment options can be selected for aging and peeling of office chairs based on the degree of damage:

I. Minor Peeling (Edge Curling, Local Surface Peeling)

  1. Cleaning: Use a neutral leather cleaner with a soft, damp cloth to wipe the peeling area along the leather grain. For stubborn stains, use a cotton swab dipped in a special stain remover.
  2. Sanding: After drying, lightly sand the uneven edges with 400-600 grit sandpaper to avoid expanding the damage and remove any residue.
  3. Repair: Choose a leather repair paste that matches the color of the chair and apply it evenly with a plastic spatula (thickness of 0.5-1 mm). If there is a significant color difference, apply in layers and allow to dry naturally before reapplying.
  4. Maintenance: After drying for 24 hours, lightly wipe the surface with a soft cloth dipped in leather conditioner (such as mink oil) to enhance flexibility and shine.

II. Severe Peeling (Large-area Cracking, Leather Delamination)

  1. Partial Leather Replacement: When a single piece of leather is damaged by more than 30%, a professional repairer cuts a patch of the same material and color, fixes it with special glue or stitching, and sprays a matching paint to restore the texture.
  2. Leather Patch + Spray Painting Technique: For multi-layer cracking, first attach a non-woven backing to reinforce the base layer, cover with a leather patch, and use a spray gun to apply acrylic resin paint to simulate a grainy texture.
  3. Overall Refurbishment: For chairs that have been in use for more than 5 years and have multiple areas of peeling, it is recommended to perform deep cleaning, film removal, damage repair, color spraying, and color fixing to restore more than 90% of the appearance, with a cost of approximately 800-1000 yuan.

III. Quick Cover-up of Flaws

  1. PU Leather Chair Covers: Waterproof and stain-resistant, easy to install. A detachable design is recommended (use gentle mode for machine washing), priced at 80-150 yuan, with a durability of 3-5 years.
  2. Elastic Chair Covers: Made of high-elasticity spandex fabric with a stretch rate of 200%, suitable for irregularly shaped chairs, and can be installed in 5 minutes.
  3. Custom Seat Covers: Choose from linen for breathability or suede for softness based on budget and preference.

IV. Other Repair Methods

  1. Leather Patches or Non-woven Backing Pads: For medium-area peeling (diameter of 3-10 cm), use a color-matched leather patch and press it firmly with a roller or heat the adhesive with a hairdryer; for non-woven backing pads, cut and place them under the peeling area for support.
  2. Self-adhesive Leather Repair: Peel off the backing paper and lay it flat on the peeling area, then trim it.
  3. Repurposing Idle Fabric: Measure the diameter of the chair seat, cut out a semi-circular fan shape and long strips of fabric, sew them together, and thread a string through to place it on the chair seat.

V. Key Points for Selecting Repair Materials

  1. Color Matching: Prioritize choosing a repair paste from the same brand and color number, or take a fragment to a physical store for comparison. If an exact match cannot be achieved, choose a product with a lighter color number and apply it multiple times.
  2. Material Compatibility: Use animal fat-based repair paste for genuine leather and acrylic resin-based materials for artificial leather.
