Office Chair Adjustment Broken

Admin October 11, 2026

When the adjustment function of an office chair is broken, it needs to be addressed according to the specific fault phenomenon. Here are common issues and solutions:

Backrest Adjustment Failure

  1. Cable Control Switch Issues

    • If the cable control cannot hold its position, first check if it is loose. Use a tool to adjust the nut to lengthen the cable distance, or check if the wire is broken (requiring replacement of the cable control) or unhooked (re-attach it to the terminal).
    • If the cable control is normal but the backrest still cannot be adjusted, the small gas cylinder connected to the backrest may have failed. Hold the thin end of the gas cylinder and press down. If there is no resistance and it can easily retract, it indicates insufficient internal air pressure, and the gas cylinder needs to be replaced.
  2. Recline Reset Failure

    • If the backrest does not automatically rebound after reclining, the control lever may have been accidentally pushed into the fixing hole. In this case, pull the control lever outward to return the backrest to its original position, and then push it back into the fixing hole to lock the angle.

Height Adjustment Failure

  1. Handle Misalignment

    • Turn the chair upside down and check if the end of the control handle is aligned with the metal pin at the top of the gas cylinder. If misaligned, use a wrench to adjust the position of the base fixing screws to ensure the handle can touch the pin.
  2. Insufficient Trigger Travel

    • If the handle is pressed all the way down but still cannot trigger the height adjustment, the gap between the pin and the handle may be too large. You can stick a coin or a piece of hard plastic such as a plastic sheet on top of the pin to compensate for the gap and then test the function.
  3. Lubrication and Cleaning

    • Long-term use may cause dust accumulation or rust in the pin gap. Spray a small amount of WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap and press the handle several times repeatedly until the pin rebounds smoothly.

Tilting to One Side

  1. Check the Wheels

    • Confirm whether the wheels make even contact with the ground when the chair is placed upright and upside down. If the wheel feet are bent or deformed, replace the entire set of matching wheels (replacing them individually may lead to instability due to size mismatch).
  2. Lubrication and Installation

    • Apply spray lubricant (such as WD-40) inside the wheel socket of the chair base and gently tap the casters with a rubber mallet to fully embed them into the socket, preventing tilting due to improper installation.
  3. Check the Seat Plate

    • If the wheels are normal but the chair still tilts, check if the seat plate (the square black steel plate located at the bottom of the seat) is deformed or broken. If damaged, contact the manufacturer for replacement.

Safety Tip: If the gas cylinder shows signs of oil leakage, automatically slides down when seated, or has cracks in the outer cylinder, stop using it immediately and replace the gas cylinder to avoid the risk of explosion due to abnormal air pressure. If the chair structure differs significantly from the above description, refer to the instruction manual or contact a professional repair technician to adjust the operation steps.
