Office Chair Adhesion
Adhesion for office chairs primarily relies on adhesives specifically formulated for PP (polypropylene) materials, with selection and application needing to consider both material properties and functional requirements.

PP, a commonly used material for lumbar support and posture chairs in office settings, is a typical โdifficult-to-bondโ material due to its low surface energy and strong non-polar molecular chains. Ordinary adhesives struggle to effectively wet its surface, resulting in insufficient adhesion and issues like delamination or substandard bonding strength. Therefore, specialized adhesives developed for PP materials are required. These adhesives significantly improve wettability on PP surfaces by adjusting their formulations (e.g., introducing polar groups or compatibilizers), allowing the adhesive to fully penetrate the material's microscopic uneven structures and form a composite bonding layer combining mechanical interlocking and chemical bonding.
In office chair manufacturing, adhesives play a core role in two aspects:
- Structural connection reliability: Components such as backrests and lumbar supports need to be firmly bonded to the main frame using adhesives to withstand dynamic loads during long-term use (e.g., repeated stress from human posture adjustments). Specialized PP adhesives provide high shear strength and peel resistance, ensuring bonding stability within a temperature range of -20ยฐC to 60ยฐC and preventing issues like brittleness or softening of the adhesive layer due to temperature changes.
- Support force transmission efficiency: The viscoelastic properties of adhesives directly affect the mechanical performance of the chair. If the adhesive layer is too hard, stress concentration can lead to component fracture; if too soft, support force dispersion reduces the chair's precise lumbar support. Therefore, it is necessary to balance bonding strength and flexibility by adjusting the modulus and damping characteristics of the adhesive. For example, two-component polyurethane adhesives can achieve adjustable hardness by modifying the curing agent ratio to meet different design requirements.
Additionally, environmental friendliness is an important criterion for modern office chair adhesives. Water-based PP adhesives, which contain no organic solvents and have low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions, are becoming a mainstream choice. However, their curing speed and water resistance require further optimization through nano-filler modification.
