Adding Rocking Function to Office Chairs
To add a rocking function to an office chair, you can achieve it by adjusting the backrest rebound force or modifying the power system, which can be divided into two categories: manual adjustment and modification upgrades.

1. Manual Adjustment of Backrest Rebound Force (Applicable to Chairs with Existing Rocking Function)
If the office chair already has a rocking function but requires adjustment of the rocking amplitude, this can be achieved by rotating the adjustment knob located beneath the chair back. The specific operation should be judged based on the design direction:
- Clockwise Rotation: Generally increases the backrest rebound force, reducing the rocking amplitude and increasing resistance, suitable for scenarios requiring stable support (such as focused office work).
- Counterclockwise Rotation: Generally decreases the rebound force, increasing the rocking amplitude and reducing resistance, suitable for relaxation and rest. Note: Before adjusting, confirm the chair's design direction (some chairs may operate in reverse) and avoid excessive adjustment that could cause structural jamming or damage.
2. Modification of the Power System for Automatic Rocking (Applicable to Chairs without Rocking Function)
If the chair originally lacks a rocking function, it needs to be modified by adding a power device. Common modification plans are as follows:
Electric Modification
- Install an internal motor (such as a micro gear motor) and a control board to drive the chair back or base in a reciprocating rocking motion through a power source.
- It can be connected to a remote control or a mobile app, supporting adjustment of rocking speed (such as slow, medium, fast) and mode (such as timed rocking, intermittent rocking).
- Note: The motor power should match the chair's load-bearing capacity to avoid overloading; the power cord should be hidden to prevent tripping hazards.
Mechanical Device Modification
- Install a spring set at the connection between the chair back and the base, utilizing spring elasticity to achieve passive rocking (similar to the principle of a rocking chair).
- Or add a motor-driven eccentric wheel, which generates rhythmic rocking by rotating the eccentric wheel driven by the motor.
- Note: The mechanical device should be firmly fixed to avoid loosening after long-term use; the material of the springs or eccentric wheels should be wear-resistant (such as stainless steel).
Smart Control Modification
- Combine motion sensors (such as accelerometers) and artificial intelligence algorithms to monitor user movements in real-time (such as changes in sitting posture, weight distribution).
- Automatically adjust the rocking force and angle based on the data (such as increasing the rocking amplitude when the user leans back and decreasing it when leaning forward).
- Note: The smart system should reserve a manual adjustment interface to prevent discomfort caused by algorithm misjudgment.
3. Safety Inspection Before Modification
Regardless of the chosen plan, prioritize inspecting the chair's basic structure before modification:
- Confirm that the gas lift has no air leaks, the base screws are not loose, and the casters are not stuck.
- If the chair has been in use for a long time (more than 5 years), it is recommended to replace the entire base before modification to avoid tipping during rocking due to structural aging.
