Accounting Subject for Office Chairs

Admin October 16, 2026

The accounting subject for office chairs should be determined based on their value, usage, and purpose, primarily falling into three categories: 'Fixed Assets', 'Low-Value Consumables', and 'Administrative Expenses - Office Expenses'. Special purposes may involve 'Sales Expenses' or 'Manufacturing Expenses'.

1. Classified as 'Fixed Assets'

If the unit value of office chairs is relatively high (usually exceeding 1000 yuan or 2000 yuan, with specific standards varying slightly according to corporate policies or Ministry of Finance regulations) and their service life exceeds one year, they should be classified as 'Fixed Assets'. Such assets require periodic depreciation, with the depreciation method (such as the straight-line method or double-declining balance method) determined according to corporate accounting policies. For example, if a company purchases a batch of office chairs priced at 2500 yuan each with an expected service life of 5 years, they should be accounted for as fixed assets, with costs allocated monthly according to the depreciation policy.

2. Classified as 'Low-Value Consumables'

If the unit value of office chairs does not meet the fixed asset criteria but the total cost is significant (e.g., high total cost from bulk purchases) or the purchase is not sporadic, they can be treated as 'Low-Value Consumables'. Such assets typically use the 50% depreciation method (50% depreciated upon purchase and the remaining 50% upon disposal) or other depreciation methods (such as the one-time write-off method or installment depreciation method) to allocate costs over the benefit period. For example, if a company purchases 20 office chairs at 800 yuan each, totaling 16000 yuan, although the unit value does not meet the fixed asset criteria, due to the significant total cost, they can be accounted for as low-value consumables and allocated over the usage period.

3. Classified as 'Administrative Expenses - Office Expenses'

For minor or sporadic purchases of office chairs (e.g., low unit value and small quantity), they can be directly classified as 'Administrative Expenses - Office Expenses' to simplify accounting treatment. For example, if a company purchases one office chair at 300 yuan, it can be directly recorded as current office expenses without going through asset or depreciation accounts.

4. Special Purpose Accounting Subjects

If office chairs are used by the sales department, related expenses can be classified as 'Sales Expenses'; if used in the production workshop, they should be classified as 'Manufacturing Expenses'. For example, the purchase cost of office chairs exclusively used by the sales department is classified as 'Sales Expenses - Office Expenses', while the cost of office chairs used in the production workshop is classified as 'Manufacturing Expenses - Office Expenses', ultimately transferred to product costs according to the allocation method.

Notes: When recording entries, refer to the latest accounting standards from the Ministry of Finance and the company's internal financial policies to ensure compliance in subject selection. For example, some companies may set the low-value consumable criteria at below 500 yuan per unit or require all office furniture to be uniformly classified as fixed assets, subject to specific policies.
