How to Account for Office Chairs
The accounting entry for office chairs should be determined based on their value, useful life, and the company's accounting policies. Generally, there are three methods: directly recording as administrative expenses, recording as low-value consumables, or recording as fixed assets, as detailed below:

Directly Recording as Administrative Expenses
If the cost of office chairs is relatively low (e.g., the unit price or the total purchase amount for a single batch is small) and the company's accounting policies do not require capitalization, they can be directly recorded under the 'Administrative Expenses - Office Expenses' account. For example, if a company purchases ordinary office chairs costing several hundred yuan each, due to their low value and minimal impact on financial statements, the expenses are fully recorded in the income statement for the current period of purchase without subsequent amortization or depreciation. This method is simple to operate, promptly reflects expense expenditures, and complies with the timeliness principle of accounting.
Recording as Low-Value Consumables
Office chairs can be classified as low-value consumables if they meet the following criteria: first, in terms of cost, the unit price or total price for a single batch is within the company's specified limit, typically below 2,000 yuan; second, in terms of useful life, the expected service life does not exceed one year. Accounting treatment involves using the one-time amortization method or the fifty-percent amortization method. For instance, if a company purchases 10 sets of conference chairs at 1,500 yuan each, totaling 15,000 yuan, and uses the one-time amortization method, the expenses are fully recorded as administrative expenses upon purchase. If the fifty-percent amortization method is used, upon purchase, the chairs are first recorded under the 'Low-Value Consumables' account, with 50% of the expenses amortized upon use and the remaining 50% amortized upon disposal. If the company amortizes the cost over 12 months, 1,250 yuan is recorded as administrative expenses each month.
Recording as Fixed Assets
Office chairs should be recorded under the 'Fixed Assets' account if they meet the following conditions: first, in terms of cost, the unit price exceeds the company's set capitalization threshold, with most companies using 2,000 yuan as the boundary; second, in terms of useful life, the expected service life exceeds one year; third, in terms of subsequent measurement, monthly depreciation must be calculated, such as using the straight-line method. For example, if a company purchases a set of solid wood office chairs costing 5,000 yuan, with a depreciation period of 5 years and a residual value rate of 5%, the monthly depreciation amount is approximately 79 yuan (5,000 ร 95% รท 60 months). If the unit price of office chairs is 2,000 yuan or more and the useful life exceeds one year, they should be accounted for under the 'Fixed Assets - Office Furniture' account and depreciated regularly.
Notes: Companies can autonomously establish capitalization standards but must clearly define them in their accounting policies. For bulk purchases, even if the unit price is low, if the total price exceeds the standard, the entire purchase may need to be recorded as fixed assets. Custom-made furniture or furniture attached to renovations with no resale value, if not fully depreciated and having no residual value, may need to be recorded under 'Long-Term Prepaid Expenses'.
