Office Chair Accidents

Admin October 11, 2026

Office chair accidents primarily involve the explosion of pneumatic lifting swivel chairs, mostly caused by inferior pneumatic rods, which can result in serious injuries or property damage in severe cases.

Typical Accident Cases

  1. Zhoushan, Zhejiang, 2007: A user was injured due to a chair explosion.
  2. Jiaozhou, Shandong, 2009: A 14-year-old boy had a rod pierce into his body while adjusting a pneumatic chair, injuring multiple blood vessels and ultimately dying from excessive blood loss.
  3. Miss Liu in Xiamen, 2015: A lifting chair suddenly exploded, with screws and small gaskets shooting into her body from the buttocks, and the pneumatic rod inserting into the anus by more than 20 centimeters.
  4. Anhui, 2017: An office chair explosion damaged a computer case.
  5. A Woman in Fujian, 2010: A pneumatic lifting chair explosion caused her to faint on the spot, with her buttocks injured and her rectum and vagina perforated.
  6. Mr. Lin in Ganzhou, Jiangxi, 2008: A computer chair explosion caused injuries to his back and hands, with a small iron rod about 15 centimeters long flying to the ceiling.

Accident Causes

  1. Thin Walls of Pneumatic Rods: Inferior pneumatic rods have insufficient wall thickness to reduce costs, making them unable to withstand high internal pressure and prone to rupture.
  2. Insufficient Purity of Inert Gases or Replacement with Compressed Air: Regular pneumatic rods should be filled with high-purity nitrogen and other inert gases, but inferior products may be mixed with air or directly use compressed air. After the gas expands due to heat, the pressure on the rod walls increases sharply, making explosions more likely.
  3. Frequent Lifting Leading to Sudden Temperature Increase: Adjusting the seat height multiple times in a short period generates heat through internal friction in the pneumatic rod. If the gas purity is insufficient or the rod walls are thin, an explosion may occur due to thermal expansion and contraction.
  4. Lack of Explosion-Proof Steel Plates: Explosion-proof steel plates, located between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod, can block explosion fragments. Inferior products often omit this component, causing fragments to shoot directly at the human body during an explosion.

Preventive Measures

  1. Choose Regular Products: Prioritize products priced over 200 yuan with clear manufacturers and qualification certificates, and avoid purchasing low-priced 'three-no' chairs.
  2. Check the Smoothness of the Pneumatic Rod: If there is stuttering, abnormal noise, or significant resistance during seat adjustment, there may be internal damage to the pneumatic rod, and it should be immediately discontinued from use.
  3. Confirm the Installation of Explosion-Proof Steel Plates: Press down on the underside of the seat cushion with your hand. If you can feel a metal plate with a thickness of โ‰ฅ2 millimeters, it indicates that an explosion-proof device has been installed; if not or if it feels too thin, use with caution.
