Office Chair Accidents

Admin October 12, 2026

The common types and causes of office chair accidents are as follows:

1. Sihoo Office Chair Seam Burst Accident

This type of accident mainly manifests as cracking at the seams of the chair back. For example, a user weighing 83 kilograms experienced a ten-centimeter crack on the chair back after using it for half a year. The core reasons for the accident are related to insufficient material durability and changes in the usage environment. Cross-border transportation may cause the chair to be squeezed or collided during the process, affecting its structural stability. After long-term use, the seams gradually experience fatigue cracking due to frequent stress (such as adjusting sitting posture and standing up). In addition, after-sales service costs are a potential risk of cross-border shopping. In this case, although the chair was within the two-year warranty period, the high shipping costs (more than two-thirds of the original price) for cross-border returns and exchanges made it difficult for the user to resolve the issue through official channels.

2. Swivel Chair Explosion Accident

The explosion risk of pneumatic lifting swivel chairs mainly stems from component defects, which are common in low-quality pneumatic rod products. The specific causes include:

  1. Thin tube walls of the pneumatic rod: Unable to withstand high internal pressure, they are prone to rupture after long-term use;
  2. Insufficient purity of inert gas or replacement with compressed air: Low-quality pneumatic rods may be filled with compressed air instead of nitrogen, leading to internal oxidation and rusting and a sudden increase in pressure;
  3. Increased temperature due to frequent lifting and lowering: When adjusting the height quickly, the internal friction of the pneumatic rod generates heat, accelerating material aging and increasing the probability of explosion.
    Such accidents have serious consequences. For example, explosion cases occurred in Zhoushan, Zhejiang in 2007, Jiaozhou, Shandong in 2009, and Anhui in 2017, resulting in casualties or property losses.

3. Pneumatic Lifting Chair Explosion Injuring People

The case of Ms. Liu in Xiamen in 2013 is a typical example of a pneumatic rod explosion injuring people. The direct cause was that low-quality pneumatic rods used compressed air instead of nitrogen, leading to internal oxidation, rusting, and loss of pressure control. During the explosion, the steel columns or fragments inside the pneumatic rod may be ejected at high speed, causing penetrating injuries or internal organ damage. Such accidents mostly occur in low-priced products purchased online. Due to the lack of quality supervision, there are serious defects in the materials and craftsmanship of the pneumatic rods.

Prevention suggestions:

  1. Give priority to office chairs that have passed international safety certifications (such as BIFMA and SGS);
  2. Avoid frequently adjusting the height of the pneumatic rod to reduce internal friction;
  3. When shopping cross-border, confirm the after-sales service policy in advance and weigh the price against the maintenance costs;
  4. Regularly check the appearance of the pneumatic rod. If you find air leakage, rusting, or abnormal noises, stop using it immediately.
