Office Caster Office Chair Modification
Admin October 09, 2026
The modification of office caster office chairs can be achieved through methods such as adding/upgrading casters, alternative mobility solutions, adjustments, protection, and wheel fixation. The appropriate method should be selected based on the usage scenario and requirements.

1. Adding or Upgrading Casters
Adding Casters:
- Purchase nylon/rubber swivel casters with a diameter of 3-5 cm (with mounting plate style). The load-bearing capacity should exceed 20% of the user's body weight. After removing the original fixed base, secure the casters to the bottom of the chair legs with bolts (install one caster on each of the four legs, and optionally install a fifth caster at the center for enhanced stability). If the chair legs are wooden, reinforce the mounting holes with metal hoops first to prevent cracking. Suitable for tiled or wooden floors; not recommended for rough concrete floors.
- Cost: Approximately 10-30 yuan per caster, requiring 4-5 casters.
Upgrading Casters:
- Replace with polyurethane silent casters, which are more than three times more durable than the original plastic casters. Some furniture stores offer modification services, costing about 80-150 yuan.
- Alternatively, choose gravity self-locking casters, which automatically lock when the user stands up, providing both mobility convenience and sitting stability, suitable for scenarios requiring frequent standing and sitting.
2. Alternative Mobility Solutions
Slider Pad Solution:
- Attach felt pads or secure silicone sleeves to the bottom of the chair legs, suitable for slight movement on carpeted surfaces. "Chair wheel covers" on Taobao cost about 20 yuan per set, with materials that reduce noise and prevent slipping, especially suitable for wooden floors.
Mobile Base Grafting:
- Purchase a used swivel chair base (average price 40-80 yuan) and install the original chair seat onto the new base using an adapter plate. Ensure the adapter plate size matches; it is recommended to bring the original chair data when purchasing.
3. Adjustment and Protection Measures
Height Adjustment:
- After modification, the seat height should allow the calves to form a 95-105 degree angle with the ground. If discomfort arises due to increased height from the casters, adjust by adding or removing seat cushion thickness (e.g., adding sponge padding).
Floor Protection:
- Hard casters should be used with PE floor protection pads; if the floor already has scratches, cut carpet remnants to the size of the wheels and secure them in place.
4. Removing or Fixing Wheels
Removing Wheels:
- Flip the chair and pull out the wheels forcefully (most are snap-fit installations). After removal, seal the wheel axle interface with 502 glue and allow a 24-hour curing period to ensure load-bearing stability.
Fixing Wheels:
- After removing the wheels, replace them with four rubber foot pads (complete sets cost about 10 yuan at hardware stores); some high-end models have wheel lock functions that can be adjusted using a wrench-iconed knob on the bottom of the chair.
