Normal Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

Normal office chairs are chairs equipped for the convenience of work in daily work and social activities. They can be divided into narrow and broad senses, with various types. When selecting, attention should be paid to aspects such as lumbar support, adjustment functions, and materials, while also being mindful of quality issues.

Definition and Classification of Office Chairs

OfficeMate categorizes office chairs into narrow and broad senses. In the narrow sense, it refers to the backrest chairs used for desk work while sitting. In the broad sense, it encompasses all chairs used in offices, including executive chairs and staff chairs. There are also different types of office chairs, such as ergonomic chairs and ordinary swivel chairs. Ergonomic chairs can follow the movements of the waist, specifically designed to relieve lower back pain from prolonged sitting. The headrest, armrests, and lumbar support are all adjustable. Ordinary swivel chairs are basic models with height adjustment and rotation functions.

Selection Tips

  • Lumbar Support: Choose dynamic lumbar support that can 'follow the waist', providing better fit and effective support for the lower back.
  • Seat Height: A seat height of 40 to 44 centimeters is most appropriate, allowing the feet to rest firmly on the ground when seated.
  • Adjustment Functions: The armrests should at least be adjustable up and down, and it is better if the headrest can rotate to meet the needs of different usage scenarios and postures.
  • Materials: Mesh fabric is breathable and prevents sweating. High-resilience foam does not collapse after prolonged sitting. For the gas lift, choose one with an anti-explosion steel plate to ensure safety.

Standard Height and Fit

The standard height of an office chair is 40 to 50 centimeters. According to the provisions of GB/T 3976 - 2014, the height of adult office chairs should be within this range, calculated based on ergonomics. For most adults, men commonly use 43 centimeters and women commonly use 40 centimeters as the benchmark height. Moreover, office chairs must be adjustable. The current mainstream gas lift can be adjusted by 6 to 10 centimeters to fit different heights. When seated, the feet should be able to rest flat on the ground, with the thighs and lower legs kept perpendicular. The desktop height should preferably be level with the elbows, and the height difference between the desk and chair should be controlled between 28 and 32 centimeters.

Quality Issues

There are some quality issues with office chairs. On March 2, 2023, the United States and Canada implemented a recall of office chairs made in China due to the risk of the backrest breaking and causing falls. On September 30, 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation found that 15 batches of products failed the national supervision and random inspection of office chairs, with stability issues being prominent. On January 16, 2025, the United States implemented a recall of WorkPro Momentum office chairs made in China due to the risk of bolt failure and falls.
