Nitrogen Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

Nitrogen office chairs generally refer to pneumatic lifting chairs, which carry certain safety risks, but the risks are relatively low for genuine products. Proper operation is required during use.

The core component of a nitrogen office chair is the pneumatic rod, which contains a cylinder device. The up-and-down movement of the piston rod enables the seat to be raised or lowered, and nitrogen is usually filled inside the rod as the transmission medium. For nitrogen office chairs produced by legitimate manufacturers, the pneumatic rods are filled with high-purity nitrogen (usually with a purity of over 99%), which offers good stability and a low probability of explosion.

However, if inferior pneumatic rods are used or the gas filled has insufficient purity (generally, a gas purity below 90% may pose safety hazards), the pressure inside the pneumatic rod may suddenly increase under conditions of frequent lifting and lowering or high temperatures, leading to an explosion risk. Explosions usually have three main causes: first, cost-cutting measures where some manufacturers use compressed air instead of nitrogen, which may ignite when in contact with lubricating oil; second, poor-quality gas rods with uneven wall thickness; third, improper handling of the chair, such as frequent lifting and lowering in high-temperature environments, causing the pressure in the gas rod to soar. In addition, inadequate sealing of the closure and insufficient robustness of the material of the pneumatic rod's container wall can also directly affect the safety of the chair. There have been several incidents in China where nitrogen office chairs have exploded, causing serious injuries. For example, in 2009, a child in Shandong was killed when a rotating, adjustable-height chair exploded, and the pneumatic rod was forced up through the child's buttocks, damaging multiple blood vessels; there have also been cases where floors were blown through and computers were damaged.

To ensure safety when using a nitrogen office chair, the following precautions should be taken: choose products from legitimate manufacturers, purchase products with quality certification marks, opt for well-known brands priced at over 200 yuan, and check whether the pneumatic rod is labeled with โ‰ฅ90% nitrogen content; avoid repeated rotating and lifting operations, inspect the chair promptly after a period of use, and repair or replace it immediately if cracks or signs of looseness are found; individuals weighing over 100 kilograms should use the chair with caution; conduct regular inspections, and replace the chair promptly if air leakage or lifting and lowering stuttering are detected.
