New Office Chairs and Pregnant Women

Admin October 11, 2026

The impact of new office chairs on pregnant women cannot be generalized and needs to be considered on a case-by-case basis. Some new office chairs may pose risks, but there are also models suitable for pregnant women.

Health Risks Associated with Some New Office Chairs
New office desks and chairs may be manufactured using adhesives or coatings containing formaldehyde and toluene, which continuously volatilize and contribute to indoor air pollution. Formaldehyde is highly irritating and can enter the body through the respiratory tract, stimulating the mucous membranes of pregnant women (such as the eyes and nasal passages). Long-term exposure may cause symptoms like dizziness and headaches. More seriously, formaldehyde is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. When inhaled by pregnant women, it may affect the fetus through the placenta, increasing the risk of abnormal fetal development, particularly during the first trimester (a critical period for organ formation). Toluene may interfere with the neurological development of the fetus, leading to intellectual disabilities or behavioral abnormalities. Therefore, if the environmental friendliness of the materials used in new office chairs cannot be guaranteed, pregnant women should avoid using them as much as possible.

Measures to Take When Using New Office Chairs
If it is necessary to use new office chairs due to objective conditions, the following measures should be taken to reduce risks:

  1. Enhance Ventilation: Open windows for ventilation at least twice a day, for more than 30 minutes each time, to promote the expulsion of harmful gases;
  2. Auxiliary Purification: Place plants such as green radish and spider plant, which have formaldehyde-absorbing capabilities, in the office area, or use air purifiers that meet national standards;
  3. Symptom Monitoring: If symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, or nausea occur, immediately leave the office environment and rest in an area with good air circulation;
  4. Regular Prenatal Check-ups: Strictly follow the doctor's advice for prenatal check-ups, focusing on fetal ultrasound examinations (such as NT checks and major anomaly screenings) and blood screenings to detect abnormalities promptly.

Selection of Office Chairs Suitable for Pregnant Women
There are office chairs on the market specifically designed for pregnant women, such as the BKT posture chair. Their design features include:

  • Ergonomic Support: Through adjustable lumbar supports and seat cushions, they distribute the pressure on the lumbar spine caused by weight gain during pregnancy, relieving back pain;
  • Breathable Materials: They use mesh fabric or high-density foam to reduce the stuffy feeling caused by prolonged sitting and lower the risk of skin allergies;
  • Optimized Stability: They feature widened bases and anti-slip wheels to prevent pregnant women from falling due to changes in their center of gravity.
    Some pregnant women report that such office chairs provide comfortable support during pregnancy and lactation. However, it is important to choose products that have passed national environmental certifications to ensure that the materials do not release harmful substances.
