New Office Chair Makes Noise

Admin October 17, 2026

The new office chair makes noise, which may be caused by loose components, caster problems, seat material issues, gas lift malfunctions, or installation problems, and can be addressed accordingly.

  • Loose components: Office chairs are assembled from numerous components. Connectors such as screws and nuts are prone to loosening after prolonged use or improper installation. When the chair bears the weight of a person and undergoes tilting or turning movements, the loose components rub and collide against each other, producing a creaking sound. In this case, carefully inspect all the connection points of the office chair, such as the screws and nuts at the joints between the chair legs and the seat, and the armrests and the seat. Tighten the loose ones with an appropriate screwdriver or wrench. If the screws are severely worn and cannot be effectively tightened, replace them with new ones in a timely manner.
  • Caster problems: The internal bearings of the casters may wear out after long-term rolling, resulting in uneven rotation and a creaking sound when moving the chair. If the casters are covered with too much dust and debris, it can also affect their normal operation. First, invert the office chair and wipe the surface dust and debris off the casters with a clean cloth. If there is a lot of internal dirt, drip an appropriate amount of lubricating oil onto the bearing parts to restore smooth rotation of the casters. If the casters are severely worn, they need to be replaced with new ones.
  • Seat material issues: For leather seats, as the usage time increases, the leather may become hard due to dryness and aging. When a person sits on it or gets up, the friction between the leather pieces can produce a creaking sound. For fabric seats, sounds may be generated due to friction between the fabric and the frame or displacement of the internal filling materials. For leather seats, regularly use leather conditioners for maintenance to keep the leather soft and elastic. For fabric seats, check if the fabric is firmly fixed. If it is loose, re-fix it. You can also add soft cushions at the contact points between the seat frame and the fabric to reduce friction.
  • Gas lift malfunctions: The gas lift is a key component for adjusting the height of the office chair. If there is gas leakage inside or the seal is not tight, a creaking sound may occur when adjusting the chair height or when the chair is subjected to force changes. Do not disassemble it yourself at this time because the gas lift contains high-pressure gas, and improper operation can be dangerous. Contact the manufacturer or a professional repair person to inspect and replace the gas lift.
  • Installation problems: If the screws are not fully tightened or the lubrication is not sufficient during installation, the friction between the components will increase, resulting in abnormal noise. It is recommended to check all the screws one by one after installation to ensure they are tightened properly, especially the connection part between the wheels and the chassis. Select a professional lubricant and apply it evenly on the wheel axles, gas lift mechanisms, and connection joints to reduce friction.
