New Office Chair Dimensions

Admin October 11, 2026

The selection of dimensions for new office chairs should be comprehensively determined based on ergonomic standards and usage scenarios, with specific parameters as follows:

1. Seat Height
The standard dimension is 40-45 centimeters, but it is recommended to prioritize adjustable models with a range covering 38-48 centimeters. This design can accommodate people of different heights: 41-43 centimeters are recommended for men, and women can have it slightly lower by 2-3 centimeters. The adjustment principle is to ensure that the thighs and lower legs are perpendicular or at a 100ยฐ angle when sitting down, avoiding pressure on the nerves behind the knees. If the chair height is fixed, ensure that there is a 25-30 centimeter drop between the seat surface and the desktop (standard desk height is 75-78 centimeters) to maintain the correct sitting posture.

2. Seat Width
Fixed-model seat widths are usually 40-45 centimeters, while for adjustable models, it is recommended to choose 40-50 centimeters. When selecting, ensure that the buttocks are fully in contact with the backrest, and leave about 5 centimeters of space between the calves and the edge of the chair to avoid leg compression due to a narrow seat or reduced mobility efficiency due to a wide seat.

3. Seat Depth
40-42 centimeters are recommended for men, and 38-40 centimeters for women. When sitting down, ensure that the buttocks are in close contact with the backrest and there is no pressure on the back of the knees. For compact designs such as screen office chairs, the seat depth can be shortened to 35-40 centimeters, but the support should be compensated by adjusting the backrest tilt.

4. Backrest Height
For ordinary office chairs, a backrest height of 39-42 centimeters is recommended, focusing on supporting the lower back (the 3rd to 5th lumbar vertebrae); for executive chairs or large office chairs, the backrest can reach 48-63 centimeters and may be equipped with an adjustable headrest to disperse cervical spine pressure. The choice should be based on the usage scenario: for long hours of desk work, it is advisable to choose a model with clear lower back support; for meeting or reception scenarios, emphasis can be placed on balancing appearance and comfort.

5. Other Key Parameters

  • Adjustment Functions: Prioritize chairs with adjustable height (adjustment range of 24-30 centimeters). Some models also support adjustments in seat depth, backrest tilt, and armrest height, further enhancing adaptability.
  • Material Selection: Mesh materials offer good breathability but weaker support, suitable for summer or short-term use; sponge materials provide better support but require regular cleaning; leather materials have a formal appearance but poor breathability, requiring consideration based on usage frequency.
  • Space Allocation: At least 90 centimeters of activity space should be reserved around the chair to avoid collisions or awkward postures due to cramped space.

When making an actual selection, it is recommended to conduct test sittings and adjustments based on personal height, desk height, and usage scenarios to ensure no fatigue during long-term use.
