National Office Chairs
The national office chair industry has formed a large-scale and intelligent development pattern, but quality supervision still needs to be strengthened.

I. Industry Development Status Since 2000, China's office chair industry has rapidly developed through the OEM model. Anji County in Zhejiang Province has become the world's largest production base, forming a complete industrial chain cluster. In 2024, China's total production of office chairs reached 177 million pieces, with 84.64 million pieces exported, accounting for a significant proportion of the global market share. The industry is showing a trend of intelligence, with some high-end products integrating pressure sensors and health monitoring functions, and enabling personalized adjustments such as sitting posture reminders and prolonged sitting warnings through apps to meet the needs of healthy office work. It is predicted that the market size of hydraulic lifting swivel chairs will exceed 16 billion yuan in 2025, reflecting the growing demand for functional products in the market.
II. Quality Supervision and Standard System Despite the large industry scale, there are still challenges in quality supervision. According to a supervision and inspection by the State Administration for Market Regulation in September 2024, 15 batches of office chair products were found to be unqualified, with the main problems being insufficient stability, such as substandard base load-bearing capacity and defects in the explosion-proof performance of the pneumatic rods, which may lead to tipping or explosion risks. In terms of standard formulation, the Guidelines on Specifications and Performance of General Office Furniture for Central Administrative Institutions issued by the National Government Offices Administration put forward recommended indicators for the appearance dimensions, surface physical and chemical properties (such as abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance), mechanical properties (such as load-bearing capacity and stability), and environmental protection requirements (such as formaldehyde emission) of office chairs. For example, the guidelines suggest that the seat width of an office chair should be no less than 400mm, the depth no less than 380mm, and the pneumatic rod should pass 100,000 fatigue tests. However, it should be noted that these guidelines are non-mandatory standards, and enterprises can choose to implement them according to their own positioning.
III. Industry Trends and Suggestions In the future, the office chair industry will deepen its development in the directions of intelligence and health, while strengthening quality and safety supervision. Enterprises should focus on the environmental friendliness of materials, the stability of structures, and the reliability of intelligent functions to avoid product recalls or legal risks due to quality problems. When purchasing, consumers can give priority to products that have passed certifications from domestic and foreign standards such as BIFMA (Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association) or GB/T 3325-2016, and pay attention to the brands of pneumatic rods (such as Samhongsa in South Korea and SUSPA in Germany) and explosion-proof designs.
