National Office Chair Standards
The current office chair standards in China cover official industry standards and group standards, involving multiple dimensions such as basic requirements, body pressure testing, and quality grading.

I. Official Light Industry Standards
QB/T 2280-2016 'Office Furniture - Office Chairs' is a fundamental general standard formulated by the China National Light Industry Council and implemented in 2016. This standard specifies the classification, technical requirements, and testing methods for office chairs. Key indicators include a minimum adjustable range of 60mm for seat height, along with specific requirements for structural safety (such as stability and strength) and material environmental protection (such as formaldehyde emission levels). It serves as the core basis for industry production and testing.
II. Body Pressure Distribution Testing Standards
QB/T 5618-2021 'Measurement Method for Body Pressure Distribution of Office Chairs', released in 2021, standardizes the testing process and methods for body pressure distribution. This standard evaluates the comfort of office chairs by quantifying the pressure distribution between the human body and the seat surface during sitting. It provides a scientific basis for product design optimization, particularly for the research and development of high-end or ergonomic chairs.
III. Group Standards for Supplementary and Detailed Requirements
- T/SPEMF 0003-2021 'Office Chairs': Formulated by the Shanghai Furniture Industry Association and implemented in 2021, this standard refines classifications and supplements safety requirements, such as flame retardancy (compliant with GB 8624-2012) and limits on harmful substances (such as heavy metal content). It also adds indicators for comfort (such as seat cushion resilience) and durability (such as chassis fatigue testing).
- T/SZFA 3006-2021 'Office Chairs': Released by the Shenzhen Furniture Industry Association and applicable to indoor office chairs, this standard covers product classification, technical requirements (such as armrest strength), inspection rules, and packaging specifications, emphasizing quality control throughout the entire product lifecycle.
- T/CNFA 016-2021 'Quality and Safety Grading of Office Chairs': Formulated in 2021, this standard defines rules for grading quality and safety by comprehensively evaluating indicators such as structural safety, material environmental protection, and functional durability. It classifies products into different grades, guiding differentiated competition in the market.
IV. Regulatory Dynamics and Issues
In 2024, a supervision and inspection conducted by the State Administration for Market Regulation revealed that 15 batches of office chairs failed to meet standards, with stability issues being prominent, such as loose chassis and tipping risks. This reflects that some enterprises have not strictly adhered to standards and need to strengthen production process control and finished product testing.
