Packing Office Chairs for Moving

Admin October 13, 2026

When moving, packing office chairs can be done following these steps to ensure safety and efficiency:

1. Prepare Tools and Materials

Gather in advance screwdrivers (Phillips and flat-head), rubber mallets, socket wrenches, stretch wrap, bubble wrap, foam peanuts, foam corner protectors, packing tape, and appropriately sized cardboard boxes. If the original packaging boxes are still intact, they can be used directly to simplify the process. Choose tools that match the chair's structure; for example, use a socket wrench for disassembling metal parts and a rubber mallet to avoid damaging surfaces during tapping.

2. Clean and Pre-treat

Wipe the armrests, backrest, and seat cushion with a slightly damp cloth. Removing dust prevents the stretch wrap from slipping during packing and avoids bringing dirt into the new environment. If the chair has adjustable features (such as height adjustment or rotation), return the components to their smallest possible size for easier disassembly and packaging later.

3. Disassemble Removable Parts (if applicable)

  1. Base Disassembly: Turn the chair upside down and gently tap along the edge of the base ring with a rubber mallet to loosen it, then pry the gas lift away by hand. Apply even pressure during operation to prevent the gas lift from suddenly popping out and causing injury.
  2. Seat Separation: After placing the chair upright, use a screwdriver to remove the screws on the underside of the seat plate, then tap the metal base and use your body weight to separate the seat plate from the hydraulic lift rod. Hold the lift rod steady with one hand to prevent it from tipping over.
  3. Armrest Disassembly: Use a socket wrench to unscrew the side screws. If there are adjustment knobs underneath, pry open the plastic cover first before removing the base screws. Some armrests are tightly connected to the seat plate and require patience to avoid forcing and pulling.

4. Protect and Secure Parts

  1. Removable Parts: Wrap each part tightly with 3-5 layers of stretch wrap, then wrap it horizontally and vertically with 2 layers of bubble wrap. Extra thick wrapping is needed for protruding parts (such as chair legs and armrest connections).
  2. Non-removable Chairs: Wrap the entire chair tightly with stretch wrap, then add a layer of bubble wrap for protection. Ensure all surfaces are covered during wrapping to avoid exposed areas from bumping.

5. Pack and Fill

  1. Box Selection: Use the original packaging boxes if available; otherwise, choose 805060cm or 120L heavy-duty cardboard boxes. Disassembled chairs usually require boxes longer than 80cm.
  2. Packing Principles: Place the chair upright in the box, with large parts like the seat plate laid flat at the bottom and smaller parts like armrests and bases placed around the sides. Fill the spaces between parts and between parts and the box walls with foam peanuts or bubble wrap to prevent shifting during transport.

6. Label and Mark

Attach "Fragile" and "Valuable" labels to the outside of the box. Remind movers to handle with care to reduce the risk of damage. If the chair contains glass or electronic components, add additional labels such as "Handle with Care - Glass" or "Moisture-Proof."
