Moldy Office Chair
After an office chair becomes moldy, targeted treatment measures should be taken according to the degree of mold growth, and health protection should also be noted.

I. Treatment for Slight Mold Growth
If the mold spots are only on the surface and in the crevices, follow these steps:
- Basic Cleaning: Use a damp cloth to wipe off the surface dust and loose mold spots. For the crevices, use an old toothbrush dipped in clean water to brush along the grain. For stubborn mold spots, sprinkle baking soda powder and pick them out with a toothpick wrapped in a damp cotton swab.
- Chemical Mold Removal: After removing the mold spots with a mold remover, spray a furniture mold inhibitor to prevent recurrence. This is suitable for materials such as oriented strand board and particle board. Alternatively, use a soft cloth dipped in diluted white vinegar, 75% medical alcohol, or a special wood mold remover to gently wipe the moldy area. After cleaning, immediately dry the water stains with a dry cloth and move the chair to a well-ventilated place or use a fan to dry it for at least 2 hours.
II. Treatment for Severe Mold Growth
If the mold spots are dark in color (such as black or dark green), hard in texture and crumbling, or have penetrated into the wood grain, more thorough treatment is required:
- Disinfection Treatment: Wipe or spray the moldy area with diluted 84 disinfectant or a professional wood disinfectant. Follow the instructions on the product label strictly to avoid damaging the material. If the mold spots cover the entire chair, it indicates that the erosion range is too large, the repair cost is high, and it is difficult to completely remove the mold. In this case, it is recommended to replace the chair directly.
- Physical Sanding: Wear a mask and gloves, and use 80 - 120 grit fine sandpaper to sand the moldy surface layer of the wood until clean wood grain is exposed. Before and after sanding, spray or apply a special wood mold remover to the affected area, let it sit for 10 - 15 minutes, and then wipe it off to kill the deep-seated mold hyphae.
- Protective Treatment: After the treated area is completely dry, apply a wood varnish, wood wax oil, or nano antibacterial mold inhibitor to form a protective layer. After treatment, keep the area well-ventilated for at least 6 hours.
III. Health Risks and Protection
The surface of a moldy chair contains a large number of mold spores, which can be transmitted through the air. Inhaling them may cause skin allergies and respiratory symptoms (such as coughing). Long-term exposure can also lead to a weakened immune system. When handling the mold, be sure to wear a mask and gloves to avoid direct contact with the mold. After handling, clean your hands and tools in a timely manner. If the symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention promptly.
