Mobile Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 10, 2026

Mobile office chair explosions typically refer to sudden explosive phenomena in pneumatic lift-type swivel chairs caused by component defects, often related to low-quality pneumatic rods. Here is a detailed analysis:

  1. Causes of Explosion
Pneumatic rods are the core components of lift-type swivel chairs. They are filled with inert gases (such as nitrogen) and achieve lifting and lowering functions through pressure differences. If the gas purity is insufficient (mixed with oxygen or other impurities) or if the pneumatic rod has manufacturing defects (such as poor sealing or substandard wall thickness), the internal pressure may rise sharply under high-temperature conditions (such as direct sunlight or proximity to heating sources) or frequent friction (such as long-term height adjustments), leading to an explosion. For example, in 2013, Ms. Liu's swivel chair exploded due to a burst pneumatic rod, resulting in more than ten fragments and metal debris being found in her body, causing severe injuries and a coma.

  2. Historical Cases and Quality Issues
According to a sampling inspection by the State Administration for Market Regulation, the failure rate of office chairs reached 23.3% in 2020, with 17 batches being swivel chairs. The main issues were concentrated on the substandard high- and low-temperature resistance of the pneumatic rods and the lack of explosion-proof steel plates. Such defects directly increase the risk of explosions. Historically, a seat explosion occurred in Zhoushan, Zhejiang in 2007, and in 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong was fatally injured when a top rod from a pneumatic chair pierced his body during an adjustment, both incidents related to low-quality pneumatic rods.

  3. Preventive Measures

  • Choose reputable products: Prioritize brands priced above 200 yuan that have passed national safety certifications (such as 3C certification) and avoid purchasing "three-no" products (products without a manufacturer's name, production address, or quality certification).
  • Inspect pneumatic rod performance: Observe whether the height adjustment is smooth without stuttering or abnormal noises; press the seat cushion with your hand to feel whether the rebound of the pneumatic rod is uniform.
  • Confirm the presence of explosion-proof steel plates: Reputable products will have explosion-proof steel plates with a thickness of โ‰ฅ2 millimeters installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod, effectively blocking explosive fragments. When purchasing, you can request the merchant to provide product cross-sectional diagrams or inspection reports.
  • Usage environment: Avoid placing the chair in high-temperature environments (such as direct sunlight or near heating sources) for extended periods and reduce frequent height adjustments.
