Metal Rod Under Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

The metal rod under the office chair mainly has a lifting function and a backrest tilt force control function, and has different structural characteristics.

Functional Roles

  • Lifting Function: The metal rod (gas spring) in the center of the office chair is a key component for adjusting the seat height. It operates through high-pressure nitrogen gas inside. The handle or button on the right side of the chair controls the lifting by squeezing the piston inside the gas spring. This design can well adapt to the office needs of people of different heights, allowing users to find the most comfortable height. For example, in an executive chair, the rod on the right is responsible for lifting. When using it, simply lift the chair slightly while sitting to raise it, and press down to lower it. When adjusting the height, it is recommended not to leave the seat. Use your body weight to assist in the adjustment. When your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle and your feet can rest flat on the ground, it is the most comfortable position.
  • Backrest Tilt Force Control: Some office chairs are equipped with a rod to control the backrest tilt force. Taking an executive chair as an example, the rod on the left serves this function. Lifting it allows the chair to recline backward. Find the desired angle and then press it down to lock it. Some high-end chairs are also equipped with knobs, allowing users to adjust the tightness of the backrest tilt according to their own needs. People with a larger body weight can tighten the knob, while those who want to relax during a lunch break can loosen it a bit.

Structural Characteristics

  • Gas Spring: As a lifting column, the outer layer of the gas spring is usually wrapped with an anti-static plastic layer. The main purpose of this design is to prevent scratches on the floor caused by friction when the chair is moved, thus protecting the floor.
  • Base Types:
    • Single-rod Base: This type of base is commonly used in office chairs, computer chairs, swivel chairs, and other daily-use seats. It is made of hollow steel pipes, featuring light weight, practicality, and strong applicability, and takes up little space.
    • Double-rod Base: It adopts a double-barrel structure, which gives it better support capacity. However, due to its relatively bulky nature, it is not convenient for handling and operation, so it is usually used in functional seats such as rocking chairs and massage chairs.
    • Tray-type Base: It is stamped and formed from a single piece of metal plate as a whole. It has a simple and beautiful appearance, strong support capacity, and a wide seat. It is suitable for some special models of seats, such as gaming chairs and motorcycle seats.
