Mesh Office Chair Collapse
Admin October 12, 2026
The collapse of mesh office chairs is mainly caused by issues such as materials, craftsmanship, and frame structure, and different solutions can be adopted according to the degree of collapse.

Causes of Collapse
- Low-quality mesh material: Low-end chairs use recycled chemical fiber ordinary mesh. The fibers have poor toughness and insufficient tensile strength. The weaving density is low, and the tensile resistance is weak. Long-term pressure can easily cause the mesh to stretch, lengthen, and deform. Mid-to-high-end models use high-elastic glass fiber and imported reinforced mesh. The warp and weft threads are thicker, and the weaving density is high. They have inherent rebound tension, are resistant to pulling, and are not easily loosened.
- Thin and inadequately curved seat cushion frame material: Cheap models have thin frame walls and brittle materials, which are prone to deformation under stress. The frame curvature lacks a tensile pre-tightening design, so the mesh cannot be tightly stretched when installed. When a person sits down, the frame undergoes slight deformation, and the mesh is stretched larger. Over time, it naturally becomes loose and wrinkled.
- Shoddy assembly craftsmanship: Regular factories evenly stretch the mesh on all four sides and reinforce it with fixed stitching at specific points to ensure balanced tension. Small workshops simply use snap fasteners for fixation without stretching the mesh tightly or performing tensile shaping. The chairs may look fine when leaving the factory but gradually become loose and sag after a few months of use.
- Reduced configuration of the sponge auxiliary layer: Low-priced models omit the cushioning layer, placing all the weight on the mesh. Long-term single-point pressure can easily cause local depression and loosening.
- Unreasonable seat surface size design: If the seat cushion is too wide with a large span, the suspended area of the mesh is large, and the tensile force increases exponentially. It is more likely to stretch and deform compared to conventional sizes.
Solutions
- Mild collapse (sagging < 1 cm, only local loosening): You can make adjustments yourself. Find the mesh fixing straps under the seat cushion, tighten the screws, and re-stretch the straps in a criss-cross pattern. Fix them with nails at the joints. You can also add a thin high-density sponge pad to the collapsed area. The cost is generally no more than 50 yuan, and the operation threshold is low. However, it can only relieve discomfort and cannot fully restore the original support.
- Moderate collapse (sagging of 1 - 2 cm, overall loosening of the mesh but no damage): If the chair is within the warranty period, prioritize contacting the brand's after-sales service to apply for a free mesh replacement or adjustment service. If the warranty has expired, you can purchase a replacement mesh of the same size yourself. The replacement cost of an ordinary dragon-patterned special mesh is about 100 - 200 yuan, and that of a U-mesh is about 200 - 300 yuan. You can install it yourself or have a third-party furniture repair service come to your place for replacement. After replacement, it can basically restore more than 80% of the original sitting feel.
- Severe collapse (sagging > 2 cm, damaged mesh/loose frame): Repair is not recommended. Even if the mesh is replaced, the loose frame will result in insufficient support, and the probability of subsequent collapse is high. If there are also problems such as ineffective lumbar support and damaged adjustment functions, it is more cost-effective to replace the chair with a new one.
