Menstrual Blood on Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

When menstrual blood gets on an office chair, follow these steps for handling:

I. Initial Treatment

  1. Absorb excess liquid: Immediately press the stained area with dry paper towels or a highly absorbent cloth (such as cotton or non-woven fabric). Avoid rubbing or scrubbing to prevent the blood from spreading further.
  2. Treat dried blood: If the blood has dried, slightly moisten the stain with cold water (never use hot water, as hot water can coagulate proteins and make cleaning more difficult), then blot the moisture with paper towels.

II. Choose a cleaning solution based on the scenario

  1. Home or office environment:
    • Mixed cleaner: Combine cold water with a small amount of dish soap or baking soda. Gently scrub the stained area with a soft-bristled brush (such as a toothbrush), then wipe away any residue with a damp cloth.
    • Stubborn stain treatment: For more stubborn bloodstains, dilute hydrogen peroxide in a 1:1 ratio and apply it to the stain. Let it sit for 5 minutes before wiping (test the material for colorfastness in a hidden area first).
  2. Public places:
    • Ask staff for cleaning spray or wipes. If unavailable, use personal wipes or mineral water-soaked paper towels to clean the area locally, then blot dry with dry paper towels.
  3. Emergency cover-up: If you need to temporarily conceal the stain, cover the chair with a coat, scarf, or other item and address it as soon as possible.

III. Adapt cleaning methods based on material

  1. Wooden/plastic chairs:
    • After wiping with cold water, disinfect with an alcohol spray (avoid prolonged soaking to prevent cracking).
  2. Fabric/cushioned chairs:
    • After cleaning, dry with a hairdryer on the cool setting or place in a well-ventilated area to air dry (prevent mold growth).
  3. Leather/faux leather chairs:
    • Avoid using cleaners containing alcohol or strong acids/bases. Gently wipe with a dedicated leather cleaner, then apply hand cream or petroleum jelly for maintenance (prevent leather from cracking).

IV. Follow-up protective measures

  1. Prevent leaks: During menstruation, carry disposable period underwear or a small waterproof seat cushion to reduce the risk of accidental leaks.
  2. Backup items: Keep spare clothes, wipes, and a small bottle of cleaner at your usual locations (such as the office) for prompt handling.

V. Precautions

  • Avoid hot water: Hot water accelerates protein coagulation, making stains harder to remove.
  • Health awareness: If menstrual flow is excessively heavy or frequent leaks occur, consult a doctor to adjust your care plan (such as changing sanitary product types or checking for underlying health issues).
