Mechanical Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 10, 2026

Pneumatic lift-type swivel chairs in mechanical office chairs do pose an explosion risk, primarily due to component defects, especially those in low-quality pneumatic rods.

Pneumatic rods, the core components of pneumatic lift chairs, are essentially miniature high-pressure vessels that rely on air pressure to push pistons for height adjustment. Qualified pneumatic rods produced by reputable manufacturers are filled with high-purity inert nitrogen, which is stable in nature. A single compliant pneumatic rod can withstand up to 2,000 pounds of pressure. However, unscrupulous manufacturers often use ordinary compressed air instead of nitrogen to cut costs. The oxygen in the air reacts with the metal inner wall through oxidation, causing the pneumatic rod to rust, accumulate heat, and experience a continuous surge in internal pressure, while the outer wall gradually becomes thinner and more brittle, ultimately potentially leading to an explosion.

The causes of pneumatic rod explosions also include overly thin tube walls, insufficient purity of inert gases, the absence of explosion-proof steel plates, and frequent lifting and lowering leading to sudden temperature increases. For example, in a 2020 inspection by the State Administration for Market Regulation, it was found that some staff chairs produced by certain enterprises posed an explosion risk due to non-compliant high- and low-temperature resistance of the pneumatic rods or the lack of explosion-proof steel plates. There have been multiple incidents of pneumatic lift chairs exploding and injuring people throughout history. For instance, in 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, died after a top rod pierced his body while adjusting a pneumatic chair; in 2013, a woman surnamed Liu in Xiamen was sitting on an online-purchased lift swivel chair to blow-dry her hair when the pneumatic rod exploded, causing a steel column to penetrate her body, with more than ten metal fragments removed from her intestines.

To prevent such risks, consumers should purchase products from reputable manufacturers, preferably those priced above 200 yuan, as these products usually undergo strict quality inspections, ensuring better quality of the pneumatic rods. At the same time, check the smoothness of the pneumatic rod's lifting and lowering. If there is stuttering or abnormality during lifting and lowering, there may be component defects. Additionally, ensure that an explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod. The explosion-proof steel plate can block flying fragments in the event of a pneumatic rod explosion, reducing the risk of injury.
