Making Office Chairs in Maya

Admin October 12, 2026

Making office chairs in Maya can be achieved through two methods: basic modeling or cylinder deformation. The specific steps are as follows:

Method 1: Basic Modeling Based on Cubes (Suitable for Simple Office Chairs)

  1. Create the Seat Base
Use the Polygon Cube tool to create a cube, adjusting the parameters to a length and width of 4.5 units and a height of 0.25 units. Fine-tune the dimensions using the Scale Tool to ensure the seat proportions meet actual needs.

  2. Optimize Edge Structure
Hold down the Shift key and right-click on the cube, selecting the Insert Edge Loop Tool to add circular edges along the seat edges, enhancing structural details. Use the Scale Tool to adjust the edge positions, forming an ergonomic curve.

  3. Create Chair Legs
Select the four bottom faces of the seat and use the Extrude Tool to pull them downward, forming chair legs. Refine the leg thickness using the Marquee Select tool, such as thickening near the seat and tapering at the bottom to simulate real structures.

  4. Bevel Processing
After inserting circular edges, use the Bevel Tool to smooth the leg edges, preventing structural deformation during Smooth Preview.

  5. Add a Backrest
Duplicate the seat cube and adjust its position, shaping the backrest curve using the Extrude and Scale tools. For a curved backrest, further adjust using the Bend Tool from the Nonlinear Deformer.

Method 2: Cylinder Deformation (Suitable for Chairs with Curved Backrests)

  1. Create a Cylinder and Adjust Its Curve
Use the Polygon Cylinder tool to create a cylinder, rotating it 90ยฐ to stand vertically. Select the Bend Tool from the Nonlinear Deformer and adjust the parameters to form an overall curve in the cylinder, serving as the backrest base.

  2. Create Chair Legs and Support Structures
Duplicate the cylinder and enter Vertex Edit Mode, moving vertex positions to form chair legs and support structures. Use the Scale Tool to refine leg thickness, ensuring the four legs are symmetrically distributed.

  3. Combine Components
Combine cubes and cylinders to create armrests, adjusting their rotation angles to align with the legs. Manage components using the Outliner for easy subsequent modifications.

General Tips

  • Enhance Structural Details: Use the Insert Edge Loop Tool to add circular edges at key positions, improving model stability.
  • Real-Time Preview Adjustments: Press the 3 key to enter Smooth Preview mode, checking if the model structure is reasonable; press the 4 key to return to Wireframe mode and continue adjusting edge positions.
  • Create Components Separately: For complex structures, break them down into components such as seats, backrests, and chair legs for separate creation, then combine them into a whole using the Combine Tool.
  • Shortcut Key Notes: Ensure the input method is in Pinyin mode during operation to ensure shortcut keys (such as Shift+right-click, 3/4 keys) work.

The two methods can be flexibly combined, such as combining a cube seat with a cylindrical curved backrest, balancing efficiency and detail representation.
