Make an Office Chair by Yourself

Admin October 19, 2026

There are mainly two methods for making an office chair by yourself: making a simple foldable chair and renovating an existing steel-structured office chair.

Making a Simple Foldable Chair

  • Material Preparation: You need to find a piece of woodworking board of an appropriate size, which serves as the main material for making the chair. Masking tape is used to draw the required patterns on the surface of the woodworking board, acting as an aid for positioning and marking. Sandpaper is used to sand the edges of the cut woodworking board to make them smooth and prevent scratching the user. A hole punch is used to create small circular holes for installing hinges. Hinges are the key components that enable the chair to fold flexibly between the open and folded states.
  • Making Steps: First, stick masking tape on the surface of the woodworking board and draw the designed patterns. After drawing, use appropriate tools to cut the woodworking board into the required shape. After cutting, carefully sand the edges with sandpaper to ensure they are smooth and flat. Then, assemble the cut woodworking boards together, use a hole punch to create small circular holes at the corresponding positions, and install the hinges. After installing the hinges, flip the chair over and continue to install the hinges for fixation. Finally, open the chair, find the support points, mark them, and create corner holes. In this way, the simple self-made foldable chair is basically completed.

Renovating an Existing Steel-Structured Office Chair (Taking a 30-Yuan DIY Lambswool Office Chair as an Example)

  • Material Preparation: Prepare lambswool fabric as the main renovation material. It is soft and comfortable, enhancing the chair's comfort and aesthetics. Velcro is used to fix the fabric, making it easy to remove and clean. Needles, threads, and scissors are basic tools for sewing and cutting.
  • Making Steps: First, renovate the chair back. Cut the lambswool fabric according to the size of the chair back and then sew it into a bag shape and put it on the chair back. Then, renovate the chair seat. Wrap the chair seat with lambswool fabric and fix it on the seat with Velcro. Finally, deal with the details. Fold the excess fabric at the four corners of the chair and sew it to make the overall appearance more beautiful and tidy.
