Load-Bearing Office Chair

Admin October 19, 2026

The load-bearing capacity of office chairs under BIFMA certification is regulated through multi-dimensional testing standards, with different test items corresponding to different load-bearing criteria. Some high-quality product materials can further enhance actual load-bearing performance.

I. Core Load-Bearing Test Standards of BIFMA Certification

BIFMA (Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association) has established strict load-bearing specifications for office chairs, covering static, dynamic, and fatigue tests to ensure the safety and stability of chairs during long-term use.

  1. Static Strength Test

    • Backrest: The functional load must withstand 890 Newtons (200 pounds) for 1 minute without damage, and the main structure should show no significant changes under a standard load of 1334 Newtons (300 pounds).
    • Five-Star Base: It must withstand a pressure of 11120 Newtons (2500 pounds) for 1 minute, with the oil core not touching the test platform after movement and the main structure remaining undeformed.
    • Armrests: Under functional load, the lowest point of the armrest design must withstand a force of 890 Newtons to meet structural strength requirements.
  2. Dynamic Impact Test

    • Seat Impact: A functional load of 102 KG (225 pounds) is dropped freely from a height of 152 millimeters onto the center of the seat, testing both the highest and lowest positions once each; under a standard load of 136 KG (300 pounds), the operation is repeated, and the main structure should show no significant changes.
    • Impact Fatigue: A 57 KG (125 pounds) weight is dropped from a height of 25 millimeters 100,000 times, with no durability loss to the seat.
  3. Fatigue Test

    • Rotation Test: With a load of 102 KG (225 pounds), the chair completes 60,000 360-degree rotations at both the highest and lowest positions without durability loss.
    • Tilt Mechanism: With a load of 102 KG (225 pounds) at the center of the seat, it tilts back and forth 300,000 times at a speed of 10-30 times per minute without damage.
    • Seat Front Legs: Each front leg bears a load of 734 Newtons (165 pounds) for 20,000 cycles without damage.
  4. Stability Test

    • Rearward Stability: With a load of 79 KG (173 pounds) at the center of the seat, a tipping force is applied to the backrest until the total weight shifts to the rear support, with the tipping force being no less than 89 Newtons (20 pounds).
    • Forward Stability: After fixing the casters, a downward force of 600 Newtons (135 pounds) is applied from 60 millimeters in front of the chair's edge, and the seat must withstand an additional force of 20 Newtons (4.5 pounds) without tipping.

II. Enhancement of Load-Bearing Capacity through Materials and Structure

Some office chairs further enhance their load-bearing capacity by optimizing materials and structural design. For example, the SumLush Xia Cai Mu Fit2 Ergonomic Chair uses high-strength aviation aluminum and steel chair frames, offering excellent stability and meeting higher-intensity usage demands. Such materials not only increase the overall load-bearing limit of the chair but also extend its service life, making it suitable for scenarios requiring long-term high-load use.
