Leather Office Chair Production

Admin October 12, 2026

The production process of a leather office chair mainly includes four stages: raw material selection and inspection, cutting, sewing, and frame making; cushion and internal structure making; and other component making and assembly.

Raw material selection and inspection are the foundation of production. Leather is the key material. The factory purchases pre-processed leather rolls, including full-grain leather, corrected-grain leather, and composite leather (PU leather). Upon arrival, strict quality inspections are carried out, checking for color uniformity, thickness, softness, surface defects, and testing physical properties such as tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and scratch resistance. Other materials, such as high-density rebound foam, affect the comfort and shape retention of the seat cushion and backrest. Metal components (e.g., five-star bases, gas rods) need sufficient strength and durability. Precision gas rods and base mechanisms are used for height adjustment and tilt functions. There are also accessories like casters and plastic covers, and all materials must undergo quality testing before being put into storage.

In the cutting, sewing, and frame-making stage, experienced sewers use industrial sewing machines to stitch flat leather into three-dimensional seat covers, backrest covers, and armrest covers, involving processes like plain sewing and double-needle sewing. The stitching is required to be neat and firm, with natural alignment of patterns and textures at the seams. The sewn leather covers need a preliminary inspection to ensure no loose threads, skipped stitches, or stains. For frame making, steel is processed through cutting, pipe bending, welding, and grinding to form the chair's main structure. The welding points need to be ground smooth. After that, the metal frame undergoes pre-treatment (e.g., degreasing, rust removal) and coating processes (usually electrostatic powder coating, where the powder cures at high temperatures to form a strong, abrasion-resistant, and aesthetically pleasing coating).

In cushion and internal structure making, workers place square steel pipes into a hydraulic press and bend them into square cushion frames with rounded corners. The support steel plates are welded to the frame openings. Then, S-shaped springs are hooked onto the frame, and three support steel bars are connected to the springs in opposite directions to complete the internal structure of the cushion.

In other component making and assembly, first, the armrest interfaces and backrest of the chair are welded and ground in a similar way to the cushion frame. Black leather is used to make the outer parts of the chair. Plastic templates for components like headrests and armrests are placed on the leather, and the leather is cut according to the template patterns using a utility knife. After the leather is cut, it is glued onto a relatively hard foam cushion, and a slightly larger foam pad is cut according to the size of the leather to make the seat cushion and backrest parts. The metal frame surface is wrapped with foam pads, and then the sewn leather covers are placed on top for decoration. The cover plates and frame are fixed with screws. The height-adjustable armrests, hydraulic rods, gas rods, and the bottom support rods of the seat are assembled with the metal base. The seat casters are installed, and the headrest and armrests are inserted into specific positions to complete the production of the office chair.
