Leather Office Chair Materials

Admin October 13, 2026

Common materials for leather office chairs include genuine leather, artificial leather, microfiber, ordinary PU leather, or PVC leather.

Genuine Leather: Genuine leather is a premium material choice for leather office chairs, primarily divided into top-grain leather and split-grain leather. Top-grain leather is taken from the surface layer of cowhide, retaining its natural fiber structure, woven from collagen fibers with tiny gaps between them, giving it excellent breathability superior to most artificial leathers. It is highly wear-resistant, with a naturally clear surface texture, unique luster, and a soft, elastic feel that gradually conforms to the body's curves over time, providing personalized support. Split-grain leather, located beneath the top layer, can also be used for office chair production after special treatment. It is less expensive than top-grain leather, with slightly lower wear resistance and breathability, but through process optimization, its appearance and texture can still reach a high level, suitable for users with a limited budget but certain quality requirements.

Artificial Leather: Artificial leather is manufactured through chemical synthesis processes, offering lower costs and a wide range of color and texture options to flexibly match different office environment styles. It has excellent waterproof and stain-resistant properties, with a surface that is not easily penetrated by liquids, making stains easy to wipe clean and reducing maintenance costs. However, compared to natural leather, there is a gap in texture and breathability, and long-term use may cause a stuffy feeling due to insufficient breathability, suitable for scenarios sensitive to price and with lower comfort requirements.

Microfiber: Microfiber belongs to the high-end category of synthetic leathers, composed of ultra-fine fiber substrates combined with polyurethane resins. Its wear resistance and hydrolysis resistance are significantly better than ordinary synthetic leathers, with breathability close to that of natural leather, and a price between genuine leather and ordinary synthetic leathers. Microfiber has a fine surface, a soft touch, and strong anti-aging properties, making it less prone to cracking or peeling over long-term use, an ideal choice balancing cost-effectiveness and durability.

Ordinary PU Leather or PVC Leather: PU leather uses polyurethane as its coating, while PVC leather uses polyvinyl chloride. Both are low-cost options but have poor aging resistance. After two to three years of use, the coating may crack or peel due to ultraviolet rays, temperature changes, or mechanical friction, affecting aesthetics and service life. These materials are suitable for short-term use or scenarios with extremely low budgets, but users must accept their lower durability.
