Loosening of Leather Office Chairs

Admin October 22, 2026

The loosening of leather office chairs needs to be addressed based on the specific cause. Here are common causes and solutions:

1. Spring Structure Issues Deformation or breakage of the built-in springs in old-style soft chairs or fabric swivel chairs is a common cause. If the spring is deformed, flip the chair, unscrew the seat surface fixing screws, remove the leather cover, and use pliers to bend the spring back to its original arc. If the spring is broken, replace it with a replacement part of the same specification, secure it with thin steel wire, and then reassemble. Be careful not to scratch the leather surface during operation.

2. Frame Loosening Issues Loose connections (such as loose screws or displaced wooden tenons and mortises) can cause the entire chair to become soft. Check all connecting screws between the seat surface, chair legs, and backrest, and tighten them one by one. If the wooden tenons and mortises are loose, inject a small amount of white glue, press firmly to fix, and let it sit for a day before use. For integrated upholstered chairs, do not disassemble them yourself; contact a professional repair technician.

3. Loosening of the Office Chair Backrest

  • Identify the Loose Location: Test the recline range of the chair back. If there is a clicking sound, it is likely that the adjusting rod screws are not tightened. If the rebound is weak, it may be due to aging of the spring or gas lift. Use a mobile phone flashlight to check for gaps at the connection below the chair back.
  • Targeted Repairs:
    • Loose Adjusting Rod Screws: Use a Phillips screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover on the base counterclockwise, expose the metal fixing frame, and then use a wrench to symmetrically tighten 6-8 fixing screws (at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent misalignment).
    • Spring Hook Displacement: Use needle-nose pliers to re-hook the slipped spring hook into the slot. If the spring is deformed, measure its length and purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3-5mm online (price range: approximately 5-15 yuan).
    • Excessive Gap in the Gas Lift: Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat, rotate the gas lift adjusting knob (black plastic part) counterclockwise, and test the rebound resistance in 30ยฐ increments.

4. Inspection of Core Screws and Adjusting Mechanisms There are usually 3-4 large screws (mostly hexagon socket screws) at the connection between the backrest and the base, which need to be tightened one by one. If the screw holes are blackened or worn, it may indicate stripped threads, and you need to replace them with slightly thicker screws or fill them with wood shavings to increase friction. Some chairs have a recline resistance adjusting knob (located at the junction of the base and backrest). Rotating it clockwise increases the resistance. If adjusting is ineffective, replace the built-in spring or adjusting mechanism.

5. Emergency Reinforcement Techniques Without professional tools, you can cut a bicycle inner tube into 3cm-wide tape and wrap it around the seams, or use rubber bands to tie the movable joints of the gas lift to maintain stability for 3-7 days. If the screws are stripped, you can wrap the screw rods with electrical tape or use cable ties to fix the connection between the backrest and armrests. However, these are only short-term emergency measures; professional repair is required for long-term use.
