Disassembly of Knoll Office Chair

Admin October 16, 2026

The disassembly of a Knoll office chair requires selecting methods based on specific components. The disassembly steps for common components are as follows:

I. Wheel Disassembly

  1. Snap-ring type: Flip the chair over steadily. Use a flat-head screwdriver to align with the small snap-ring at the connection between the wheel and the bracket. Gently tap the handle of the screwdriver with a hammer. After hearing a 'click' sound, the wheel will loosen. You can pull it out halfway and then directly pull it out.
  2. Screw-fixed type: Check if there is a small screw at the root of the wheel. If so, use a screwdriver to turn it counterclockwise a few times to remove it.
  3. Groove type: Flip the chair over. Use a hammer to strike the top of the wheel (right in the middle of the bracket) vertically. Strike it five or six times to loosen the wheel. Place an old towel underneath to prevent damage to the floor. If the wheel is rusty, drip some cooking oil for lubrication before striking.

II. Pneumatic Rod Disassembly

  1. Backrest removal: Flip the chair over. Locate the fixing screws below the seat cushion. Use a screwdriver to remove them and store them properly.
  2. Lubrication treatment: Apply WD-40 lubricant fully to the black ring and the top joint of the pneumatic rod. Wait for 1 hour for it to fully penetrate.
  3. Pneumatic rod removal: Use a rubber mallet to strike the joint evenly. If it still cannot be removed, use a pipe wrench to clamp the pneumatic rod and turn it, or contact a repair shop to use a hydraulic press to press it out. Avoid violent striking of the chassis to prevent damage.
  4. Safety tip: The nitrogen spring of a pneumatic lift chair is a dangerous component. Non-professional disassembly may cause the pneumatic rod to puncture and injure people. It is recommended to seek professional help when necessary.

III. Disassembly of Other Components

  1. Seat: Flip the chair over. Locate the screws fixing the seat. Use a wrench to loosen them and remove the seat. Some seats have a rotating knob underneath. Turn it counterclockwise to loosen and remove it.
  2. Backrest: Locate the screws around the backrest. Use a wrench to loosen them and remove the backrest. Some backrests have notches. Turn them counterclockwise to loosen and remove them.
  3. Armrests: Locate the fixing screws of the armrests. Use a wrench to loosen them and remove the armrests. Turn the contact area between the armrests and the seat counterclockwise to loosen and remove them.

Precautions

  • Disassembly order: It is recommended to disassemble layer by layer from bottom to top. Store the screws in sealed bags and label the source components to avoid confusion.
  • Rust treatment: If you encounter rusty screws, you can use lubricating oil (cooking oil can be used as an emergency substitute at home) to penetrate before turning.
  • Safety protection: Wear gloves during operation to avoid scratches from metal burrs on the skin.
